Are you looking for that perfect gift for a period drama fan in your life? This holiday season PBS Distribution has a wonderful selection of gift-giving options for Jane Austen fans and lovers of period dramas.
Masterpiece PBS is a personal favorite at our house for viewing superb series like Poldark, Downton Abbey, and Victoria. This year, there are two great sets to add to your shopping list: Sanditon Season 1 and Victoria The Complete Seasons 1-3 Collection.
“Sanditon” is the fan-favorite series that has everyone begging
for a second season! Emmy Award®-winning writer and Britain’s
national treasure, Andrew Davies, adapts Jane Austen’s last
unfinished novel vividly to life in an epic drama romantics will fall
in love with.
Upon her arrival in the seaside town of Sanditon, the sensible and
naïve Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), observes
hypochondria, avarice and attempted seduction run amok.
Lady
Denham (Anne Reid), is playing matchmaker for her destitute
nephew, Sir Edward, who is determined to seduce Lady
Denham’s ward, Clara and become the primary heir to his aunt’s
estate. The arrival of wealthy, mixed-race heiress Miss Lambe,
under the guardianship of visionary entreprenuer Tom Parker’s
(Kris Marshall), upright and charming, brother Sidney Parker (Theo James), adds an interesting
complication. Eligible men naturally find Miss Lambe fascinating, while Charlotte is intrigued by
Sidney…
With many promising loose ends and romantic possibilities, how will the young people pair off?
Who will Lady Denham designate as her heir? Will Tom’s tourist spa finally catch on with the
public? Where will that lead? Andrew Davies imaginatively enters this world of Georgian-era
suitors, hustlers and health cranks and boldly tells us what happens next.
Sanditon may not be your cup of tea if you are a pure Jane Austen fan, as it takes some modern liberties with the story line. It is based upon Jane Austen's unfinished manuscript.
Knowing that, it is still an enjoyable period drama with characters who have interesting quirks, beautiful settings and some of the same Andrew Davies charm you'd expect. It wasn't my favorite of Davies' imaginings, but it has some nods to other Austen characters.
I wouldn't watch it with kids in the room due to its more mature content (backside nudity for example). Andrew Davies wanted to "spice up" Jane Austen's original unfinished story. I don't think it really added much to the plotline to make it more "soapy" personally.
The ending left fans seriously unhappy, so it remains to be seen if there will be another season yet.
Discover all three seasons of the unmissable and critically
acclaimed global hit drama “Victoria” starring Jenna Coleman as
Queen Victoria, a nineteenth-century heroine for our times.
This landmark account of the life of one of history’s greatest
monarchs begins as Victoria takes her first faltering steps from
capricious, hormonal teenager to respected monarch,
navigating palace intrigue and constitutional crises alongside an
epic romance with her husband Prince Albert (Thomas Hughes).
As Victoria’s reign continues, she must face the very modern
challenge of balancing life as a mother and wife with her work
as ruler of the most powerful nation on Earth. As the lavish saga
unfolds against the backdrop of pivotal moments in history, the
Queen and Prince Albert must meet each public challenge while
confronting profound personal change.
Victoria will draw you in from the very first episode. It is fascinating to get a glimpse inside life of one of the most influential Queens in England. Some liberties are taken with the historical accuracy, but it only inspires you to research the actual history.
It's a well written drama about the love story between Victoria and Albert. I really hope that they continue with a season 4 at some point!
Each of these quality Masterpiece PBS series / films make the perfect gift for any period drama fan.
