We are incredibly excited for Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen 2 releasing on Digital in 4K Ultra HD™, HD and Movies Anywhere on Feb. 11, and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD on Feb. 25!

My family was obsessed with the first Frozen and the sequel did not disappoint!  The bonus features sound fun; I'm sure that my youngest will be playing the sing-along version over and over again.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2” has melted hearts around the world, becoming the No. 1 animated feature of all time. Just in time for Valentine’s Day,  the follow-up to 2013’s hit Oscar®-winning Best Animated Feature,“Frozen,” comes home, with a sing-along version and all-new extras, on Digital in 4K Ultra HD™, HD and Movies Anywhere on Feb. 11, and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD on Feb. 25.

“Frozen 2” bonus features include deleted scenes, deleted songs, Easter eggs, outtakes and a sing-along version with lyrics to the film’s forever-infectious songs. Extras invite viewers to go behind-the-scenes to hear personal, making-of stories from the “Frozen 2” cast and crew. In “Frozen 2,” the answer to why Elsa was born with magical powers is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she sets out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In the highly anticipated sequel, she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®-winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—“Frozen 2” features the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.

Speaking of sharks, Adventure Aquarium is home to the largest collection of sharks on the east coast, including the only hammerhead shark on exhibit in the US.  The shark bridge is a one-of-a-kind experience;  you're literally inches above the shark tank and can watch them swim below you.

My two girls love the hands-on experiences where you can touch sting-rays, horse shoe crabs, sea stars and more invertebrates.   Adventure Aquarium also has a special Kid Zone area for kids six and under where they can crawl, jump, and play.

There are also seasonal themes throughout the year including Scuba Santa; most recently we saw Mermaids!

Universal's Dolittle: See it or Skip it? @dolittle #Dolittle #MovieReview #ad

family friendly movies

Universal's Dolittle is in theaters today, January 17th.  I remember watching the first Dr. Dolittle adaptation with Eddie Murphy.  Eddie Murphy's comedic take was enjoyable and entertaining.  Flash forward to 2020 and there is a new version of Dolittle with star Robert Downey Jr.

I took my oldest daughter to watch Dolittle with me for a daddy daughter date.  Should you see Dolittle in theaters?  Keep reading for this dad's review.

Synopsis:

Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle.

After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company.

But when the young queen (Jessie BuckleyWild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar® winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John CenaBumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante.

The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen (The Queen), Oscar® winner Jim Broadbent and Carmen Laniado (FX’s A Christmas Carol) and features additional voice performances from Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, and Craig Robinson.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Stephen Gaghan (SyrianaTraffic), Dolittle is produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum under their Roth/Kirschenbaum Films (Alice in WonderlandMaleficent) and Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes franchise, The Judge) for Team Downey. The screen story is by Thomas Shepherd and the screenplay is by Stephen Gaghan and Dan Gregor (CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) & Doug Mand (CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). The film is executive produced by Robert Downey Jr., Sarah Bradshaw (The MummyMaleficent) and Zachary Roth (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil).

Dolittle has a great cast for the animal voices including Tom Holland, Emma THompson, Selena Gomez, Ralph Fiennes, John Cena, Rami Malek, Octavia Spencer, Antonio Banderas, and Craig Robinson.  I wasn't sure what to expect with this version of the classic book "The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle" as I've never read it.

It starts at a slow pace and takes a while to pick up.  I am glad I kept my younger five-year-old daughter at home as I don't think it would have kept her attention for the whole film.

The CGI animals were cute; the dragon might be a little scary for younger kids.  Some of the potty-type humor was a bit over the top (animal butts, farts), but for a kids film, I guess that is expected. The major themes of the film are dealing with grief, facing your fears, teamwork, and caring for animals.

Robert Downey Jr. is a great actor, but I found his British accent a little strange.  {Maybe because it felt like Iron Man was trying to be British.}

Dolittle has some enjoyable moments, is pretty family-friendly,  has some good messages, and may get your kids interested in reading the book.  For adults, it may be something you'd want to skip and see on DVD, but kids may find it more enjoyable if they haven't seen previous versions.  (My nine-year-old hasn't seen any other versions and really enjoyed it)

Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning
Elle Fanning as Aurora and Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith in Disney’s live-action MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL

Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora's impending marriage to Prince Philip is cause for celebration as the wedding serves to unite the Kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors. But, when an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be a family.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” will be packaged and released in several different formats, ensuring each member of your family can enjoy it on a variety of different devices. ·                  “You Can’t Stop The Girl” - Music video performed by Bebe Rexha

Maleficent Mistress of Evil brings more to the story line now that Aurora is older and ready to marry her prince.  Maleficent foreshadows what is to come with a great line, "love doesn't always end well."  The path to marriage doesn't run smooth for Aurora.

We learn more about where Maleficent's dark fae people come from and the struggles between them and humans, mostly based upon prejudices and fear.  {There are some qualities of the fae that reminded me of Avatar.}  We also see Aurora's struggle between the two worlds that she loves.

There are some intense scenes and fighting in the film that gives it the PG rating.   It wasn't too intense or scary for my five year old.

The acting was superb and the film has great visual effects.  I really enjoyed seeing Michelle Pfeiffer in her role as Queen Ingrith.

The film shows how there are many layers to people; light and dark, good and bad.  My girls and I had some good conversations about accepting peoples' differences and trying to get along even when you don't see eye to eye.  We also talked about how wars happen when people can't work out their differences and the effects of war (death and destruction).

Maleficent Mistress of Evil is a very enjoyable sequel that may just continue with a third movie as they left the door open.
