Before watching the film, I binge watched all six seasons of Downton Abbey, and fell in love with the Crawley family drama all over again.  It truly is a remarkable series with well-written characters, beautiful scenery and gorgeous costumes.

If you are not caught up on Downton Abbey, you can watch a series recap in the video below:

If you're new to the series, you can watch Downton Abbey The Motion Picture as a stand-alone film.  But I would suggest you watch the series first, as you'll have a better feeling for all the characters and their histories.

The film is a bit different from the series:  a bigger scale, different camera angles, and a constrained time frame.  But it has most of the characters you love from the series as well as some new people.

While I loved the film, I felt that a few of the plot lines were a bit rushed as well as predictable.  I don't want to give any spoilers if you haven't seen it.  But the time constraint made it difficult to flesh out some of the relationships like I am used to in the series.

Molesley totally steals the show in the film.  He had many funny moments, but watch for this one scene at dinner.  It had everyone rolling with laughter in the theater!

I suggest you bring tissues, as there is one scene that may bring you to tears.   I won't spill the beans, but it's pretty poignant and emotional.

Downton Abbey The Motion Picture is hopefully not the last we will see of Downton Abbey; the ending leaves you wanting more.  I am hopeful that the success of the film will encourage the writers to continue with a sequel.  {Pretty, Pretty, Please!}

  1. Favorite character is going to be hard to pick. My favorite throughout the whole would be between Matthew and Sybil. Can't wait to see the movie. Couldn't find anyone to go see it with me

  2. Violet is my favorite character because of her witty comments.
    I love her sense of traditional values .

  3. My favorite is Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. She is strong, intelligent, loving and always hilariously witty.

  4. I don’t have a favorite character, never seen the show.
