If you're new to the series, you can watch Downton Abbey The Motion Picture as a stand-alone film. But I would suggest you watch the series first, as you'll have a better feeling for all the characters and their histories.
The film is a bit different from the series: a bigger scale, different camera angles, and a constrained time frame. But it has most of the characters you love from the series as well as some new people.
While I loved the film, I felt that a few of the plot lines were a bit rushed as well as predictable. I don't want to give any spoilers if you haven't seen it. But the time constraint made it difficult to flesh out some of the relationships like I am used to in the series.
Molesley totally steals the show in the film. He had many funny moments, but watch for this one scene at dinner. It had everyone rolling with laughter in the theater!
I suggest you bring tissues, as there is one scene that may bring you to tears. I won't spill the beans, but it's pretty poignant and emotional.
Downton Abbey The Motion Picture is hopefully not the last we will see of Downton Abbey; the ending leaves you wanting more. I am hopeful that the success of the film will encourage the writers to continue with a sequel. {Pretty, Pretty, Please!}
