Family-Friendly Christmas Movies, holiday gifts

'Tis the season to watch holiday movies!

We have a family tradition of watching Christmas movies every year.  It's a fun tradition and we really look forward to it.  We recently watched Santa Fake which is now available on DVD.

SYNOPSIS
A classic Christmas movie full of holiday music, sentimental romance, family-friendly comedy, and colorful holiday spirit, SANTA FAKE brings holiday cheer with top-notch musical numbers and brilliant performances by a delightful cast that will enchant the whole family.
Pat Keeley (Damian McGinty, “Glee;” Celtic Thunder), an undocumented Northern Irish immigrant has made his way to NYC where he is taken in, unwittingly, by a crime boss (John Rhys-Davies). Asked to deliver two mysterious briefcases, naïve Pat in a panic ends up in the wrong destination: Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Santa Fe gives him a home and a job as the shopping mall Santa Claus, allowing him to hide in plain sight from both the authorities and the gangsters he is trying to evade. As Pat gets wrapped up deeper into the spirit of Christmas and his role as Santa Claus, he finds that the phony white beard and big red suit are more than just a handy disguise, but instead his real destiny.
SANTA FAKE features an all-star cast including Damian McGinty (“Glee;” Celtic Thunder), Heather Morris (“Glee”), John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the RingsIndiana Jones), Judd Nelson (“Empire;” The Breakfast ClubSt. Elmo’s Fire), Jeff Fahey (“Lost;” Alita: Battle AngelMachete), Tony Amendola (The Legend of Zorro; “Stargate;” Blow; Annabelle), Gary Farmer (Dead Man; “Longmire;” “The Red Road”), Soledad Saint Hilaire (Real Women Have CurvesOcean’s Thirteen), and Pancho Moler (“Ray Donovan;” “American Horror Story”).

Also on its way in Santa’s sleigh, as companions to the film, are the EP “Songs of SANTA FAKE” by Damian McGinty, “SANTA FAKE: The Movie Soundtrack,” and the children’s picture book: SANTA FAKE: You Are Never Alone at Christmas, which will be available in e-book and print.

Not all Christmas movies are going to be your favorite.  This one unfortunately wasn't mine.  The trailer looked pretty interesting (I'm Irish and love a good yarn), but the film was very slow going and just didn't keep my kids' attention.  We're used to more slap-stick comedy like Home Alone, where you're drawn into the film from the beginning.

There were some good songs from Damian McGinty, but we just didn't get into this one as I had expected.    Maybe if you're a Damian McGinty fan you will appreciate it more.  You'll have to judge for yourself.

New Film Releases on Christmas Day
Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Eliza Scanlen and Florence Pugh in Columbia Pictures’ LITTLE WOMEN.

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life.  In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms --  is both timeless and timely.  Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Little Women Book Fairies in Philadelphia

If you're not familiar with Book Fairies, you can learn more about this great literacy "Share-a-Book" program.

This past weekend, Little Women announced a partnership with Emma Watson and Book Fairies to hide 2000 copies of Little Women in 38 countries around the world.

Yes, you read that right.  2000 copies!    Each copy of Little Women has a special note from Emma Watson inside.  It's an amazing initiative to promote not only the film, but a love for reading.

Follow #LWBookFairies on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to see all of the fun!

Book Fairies is active in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas.  There were book drops all over Philly on Sunday, and keep your eyes out for any additional book drops TODAY Monday Dec 16th too.

✨Pennsylvania is READY! ✨ @emmawatson has officially announced our #LWBookFairies activity! Book fairies around the world are hiding a total of 2,000 copies of Little Women, in celebration of the film release. As part of the activity, a variety of editions (122 to be exact!) will be hidden for some very lucky finders. There is also a note hidden inside each copy, from Emma herself, who plays Meg March in the new film 💚 About the book: Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott’s most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War. Little Women brought Louisa May Alcott lasting fame and fortune, and far from being the "girl’s book” her publisher requested, it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America. #ibelieveinbookfairies #littlewomen #littlewomenmovie #littlewomenfilm #bookstagram #instabooks #bookobsessed #bookaddict #emmawatson #louisamayalcott #bookfairies #bookfairiesworldwide

Before watching the film, I binge watched all six seasons of Downton Abbey, and fell in love with the Crawley family drama all over again.  It truly is a remarkable series with well-written characters, beautiful scenery and gorgeous costumes.

If you are not caught up on Downton Abbey, you can watch a series recap in the video below:

If you're new to the series, you can watch Downton Abbey The Motion Picture as a stand-alone film.  But I would suggest you watch the series first, as you'll have a better feeling for all the characters and their histories.

The film is a bit different from the series:  a bigger scale, different camera angles, and a constrained time frame.  But it has most of the characters you love from the series as well as some new people.

Giveaway, Holiday Gift Guide, gifts for her, gifts for period drama fans

While I loved the film, I felt that a few of the plot lines were a bit rushed as well as predictable.  I don't want to give any spoilers if you haven't seen it.  But the time constraint made it difficult to flesh out some of the relationships like I am used to in the series.

Molesley totally steals the show in the film.  He had many funny moments, but watch for this one scene at dinner.  It had everyone rolling with laughter in the theater!

I suggest you bring tissues, as there is one scene that may bring you to tears.   I won't spill the beans, but it's pretty poignant and emotional.

Downton Abbey The Motion Picture is hopefully not the last we will see of Downton Abbey; the ending leaves you wanting more.  I am hopeful that the success of the film will encourage the writers to continue with a sequel.  {Pretty, Pretty, Please!}
