CAPE: The League of Secret Heroes by Kate Hannigan @katechicago #Sponsored #Giveaway

8/23/19
I received a copy of CAPE: The League of Secret Heroes for review.  This post contains affiliate links.

Kate Hannigan, kids books, super heroes, graphic novels

CAPE: The League of Secret Heroes just released on August 6th from publisher Simon and Schuster/Aladdin.  This S.T.E.M. middle grade reader set in Philadelphia for ages 8-12 {described as "Hidden Figures meets Wonder Woman"} takes your child on an adventure inspired by incredible real-life women from World War II.

Summary:

Josie O’Malley does a lot to help out Mam after her father goes off to fight the Nazis, but she wishes she could do more—like all those caped heroes who now seem to have disappeared. If Josie can’t fly and control weather like her idol, Zenobia, maybe she can put her math smarts to use cracking puzzles for the government.
After an official tosses out her puzzler test because she’s a girl, it soon becomes clear that an even more top-secret agency has its eye on Josie, along with two other applicants: Akiko and Mae. The trio bonds over their shared love of female superhero celebrities, from Hauntima to Zenobia to Hopscotch. But during one extraordinary afternoon, they find themselves transformed into the newest (and youngest!) superheroes in town. As the girls’ abilities slowly begin to emerge, they learn that their skills will be crucial in thwarting a shapeshifting henchman of Hitler, and, just maybe, in solving an even larger mystery about the superheroes who’ve recently gone missing.
Inspired by remarkable real-life women from World War II—the human computers and earliest programmers called “the ENIAC Six”—this pulse-pounding adventure features bold action and brave thinking, with forty-eight pages of comic book style graphic panels throughout the book. Readers will want to don their own capes for an adventure, and realize they have the power to be a superhero, too!

Author Bio:
kids historical fiction books, World War II History, ENIAC Six

Chicago author Kate Hannigan writes fiction and non-fiction for young readers. A former newspaper journalist, she loves listening to people's stories and digging deep into research. Her middle-grade historical fiction "The Detective's Assistant" (Little, Brown) received the 2016 Golden Kite Award for best middle-grade novel and was a California Young Reader Medal nominee. Inspired by the exploits of America's first female detective, Kate Warne, it features nail-biting suspense and exhilarating thrills – along with history around Abraham Lincoln and pre-Civil War America.

Kate is also the author of the picture book biography "A Lady Has the Floor: Belva Lockwood Speaks Out for Women's Rights" (Boyds Mills Press), which received four starred reviews, named a Chicago Public Library "Best of the Best" selection, Bank Street College pick for July, A Mighty Girl Best of 2018 Book, Amelia Bloomer Project pick, and a Junior Library Guild Selection.
And her three-book cooking caper series "Cupcake Cousins" (Disney/Hyperion) for early middle-grade readers was named to the Illinois READS state list and Chicago Public Library's "Best of the Best" lists. Visit Kate online at www.KateHannigan.com.
girl empowerment, historical fiction, CAPE: The League of Secret Heroes, Kate Hannigan, World War II,

I'm excited to read this with my oldest daughter who loves books about female super heroes. CAPE is not only about girl empowerment; it teaches some great lessons from a scary time in history.

The author uses her research about brilliant female mathematicians during World War II, the ENIAC Six, to inspire girls to go after their dreams.

kids historical fiction, kids books about World War II, Books about Girl Empowerment

CAPE includes 48 pages of comic book style graphic panels throughout the book that make it even more engaging to readers.

Did you know?
  • During WWII, the first electronic digital computer was being built in a top-secret lab. Called the ENIAC, it featured 18,000 vacuum tubes, an endless amount of cables, and forty 8-foot-tall panels. Six mathematicians were tasked with making it run: Kay McNulty, Jean Jennings, Betty Holberton, Marlyn Wescoff, Fran Bilas, and Ruth Lichterman—the ENIAC Six, the world's first programmers.
  • Kate Hannigan's grandfather  moonlighted on it, working after hours like millions of other people around the world who wanted to help in the war effort to defeat the Nazis.

YESTERDAY Comes to Digital and Bluray @yesterdaymovie #YesterdayMovie #Sponsored

8/16/19
I will receive a copy of YESTERDAY for review.

Imagine all the people....not knowing who the BEATLES are!

Bring family and friends together with The Beatles’ music inspired film Yesterday, on Digital September 10, 2019 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™, DVD and On Demand September 24, 2019

Universal Pictures

Jack’s life is changed forever when he discovers he is the only person on earth who remembers the music of The Beatles and must decide if he truly wants the spotlight, or if all he needs is love, after all.

Filled with heart and humor from beginning to end, Yesterday on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital comes packed with exciting bonus features including deleted and extended scenes, live performances at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, an alternate opening and ending and several featurettes with the filmmakers and cast that take fans further into the charming story.

Hailed as “Funny, original, and touching” (Patrick Stoner, “Flicks” WHYY-TV (PBS)), Yesterday is a rock-n-roll comedy about music, dreams, friendship, and the long and winding road that leads to the love of your life. Stay in, “re-experience the Beatles' songs as if they're brand-new” (Mara Reinstein, Billboard) and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles’ Abbey Road this year with the perfect at-home movie night when you own Yesterday on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital.

Jack Malik was just another struggling songwriter...but that was yesterday. After a mysterious blackout, Jack (Himesh Patel; BBC’s “EastEnders”) discovers he is the only person on earth who remembers The Beatles! As he rockets to fame by passing off the Fab Four’s songs as his own, Jack risks losing Ellie (Lily James; Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Cinderella) – the one person who has loved him and believed in him from the start.

Kate McKinnon and Ed Sheeran also star in this romantic rock ‘n’ roll comedy from Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually).

The soundtrack to YESTERDAY is available on digital/streaming services as well as CD from Capitol Records/Polydor Records. The album will be available on vinyl this Friday, August 16.
