The Glass Castle, based on the best-selling memoir written by Jeannette Walls, arrived on Digital HD October 24 and Blu-ray™ (plus Digital HD), DVD and On Demand November 7th from Lionsgate.

Hailed as “one of the must-see movies of 2017” (Vanity Fair), The Glass Castle chronicles the adventures of a young girl growing up in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads. From the producer of The Shack and The Blind Side, the film also stars Oscar ® Nominee Naomi Watts (2012, Best Actress, The Impossible) and Golden Globe ® Nominee Max Greenfield (2013, Best Supporting Actor-Television, “New Girl”),  Oscar ® winner Brie Larson (2015, Best Actress, Room) and Oscar® Nominee Woody Harrelson (2009, Best Supporting Actor, The Messenger).

Chronicling the adventures of an eccentric, resilient and tight-knit family, The Glass Castle is a
remarkable story of unconditional love. Larson brings Jeannette Walls’s best-selling memoir to life as a young woman who, influenced by the joyfully wild nature of her deeply dysfunctional father (Harrelson), found the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) and written for the screen by Cretton & Andrew Lanham, The Glass Castle features all-new bonus content including a behind-the- scenes featurette and deleted scenes.

Deleted Scene "Rex's Proposal to Rose"

This movie gave me a lot of mixed emotions.   I haven't read the book, so I wasn't familiar with the story beforehand.  The trailer appeared that it was more of an uplifting, feel-good movie about family, but it was in fact, a lot darker and more anger-inducing.  I was horrified at the childhood that Jeanette endured with an alcoholic father and neglectful mother.

While the dad has some good sober moments, there are so many negative ones, that they cast a shadow over the good moments.  On the surface, the parents appear "quirky" or "eccentric."  But as you peel back the layers and learn more about them, they become abusive and psychologically scarring.

As children, we want to feel safe and loved by our parents.  Often times we don't have an accurate picture of them, and idolize them like they are our heroes, despite their flaws.   Family can be complicated, but the dysfunction in this family was far from eccentric.

I don't want to spoil any plot lines for you, but there are many tough situations portrayed in the film, including sexual abuse.  If anything, this film is a cautionary tale on bad parenting.  It also says something about the ability of children to endure horrible circumstances and thrive.

If you're looking for a feel-good movie along the lines of The Blind Side, this may not be your cup of tea.  It didn't give me warm fuzzies, instead the story haunted me.

It is a fascinating true-story {with a very talented cast} that fans of the book will probably want to watch and compare it to the memoir.  It certainly will make a very interesting book club discussion with your girlfriends.
