Star Wars Force Friday II Is Tomorrow Sept. 1st #ForceFriday #StarWars

8/31/17
Do you know a Star Wars fan?  Then you will want to tell them about Force Friday II taking place tomorrow, Sept. 1st!

Star Wars, The Last Jedi, Star Wars products

What is Force Friday II?

Following the global phenomenon of Force Friday in 2015, Disney and Lucasfilm announced Find the Force, a global augmented reality (AR) event rolling out on Force Friday II (September 1) to commemorate the worldwide launch of new products inspired by Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Disney Store, fan experience, Find the Force, The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm

The pop-up AR treasure hunt aims to unite fans around the world in the battle against the dark side in a unique three-day event at over 20,000 retail locations across 30 countries. As fans turn up to take home new The Last Jedi products, they will have the opportunity to activate a unique augmented reality experience featuring Star Warscharacters, including fan-favorites and new surprise additions from the film.

“Force Friday II is a major milestone in the countdown to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Star Wars has always championed new technology, and we are excited that augmented reality will allow fans to experience the universe in a whole new way,” says Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm.

From September 1-3, Disney Stores and other retailers around the world will invite fans to Find the Force by taking part in an AR treasure hunt.

Here’s how it works: first, download the Star Wars App, which is your one-stop-shop for all things Star Wars(those who already have the app will need to download the latest version).

Star Wars, Disney Store, Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Then, visit the Disney Store or any one of 20,000 participating retail locations to find a graphic that contains the Find the Force logo. When you scan the graphic using the Star Wars App, you’ll reveal a character, who through augmented reality, will appear in the room with you. You can then take photos, record videos, and share the experience on social media.

Come back each day to reveal new characters (15 in total across the program’s three-day run). Click here for more information: www.starwars.com/findtheforce.

“Force Friday II puts fans right at the center of the action using augmented reality to bring our characters to life like never before. The technology theme continues in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi product line, which is our most innovative yet - we can’t wait for fans to see what’s in store.” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media.

Fans can download the latest version of the Star Wars App (v. 2.3 or higher) beginning Aug. 24 for an early look at the new Porg characters in AR before the AR treasure hunt goes live at retail.

Spirit Riding Free Season 2 Netflix Trailer & Printables #SpiritRidingFree @dwanimation

8/30/17
My family has recently fallen in love with a new Netflix series for kids called Spirit Riding Free.  We binge-watched season 1 quickly and are very excited for season 2 coming on September 8th!

This new season is more spirited than ever! As Lucky and Spirit settle into their new home in Miradero, along with Lucky’s best friends Pru and Abigail and their horses Chica Linda and Boomerang, the close-knit gang discover there are even more adventures to be had!

Netflix series for kids, Netflix series, binge-watch Netflix

Whether they're solving the mystery of missing pies, learning circus tricks from a neighboring cowboy, braving a blizzard with an unlikely companion or tangling with Lucky’s mischievous cousin Julian (voiced by High School Musical and Switched at Birth's Lucas Grabeel), the PALs always find a way to put friendship, laughter and fun first.

This family-friendly series has lots of great themes about friendship, getting along with others, hard work and determination. It has lots of action, adventure, and of course, beautiful horses.

It's time to saddle up and check out the new trailer for Spirit Riding Free Season 2, plus download some fun free activity sheets for your kids!

Leap! Now in Theaters #LeapMovie #TakeTheLeap #sponsored

8/25/17
I attended a free screening of Leap!  All opinions are mine.

movie reviews, the weinstein company

11-year-old orphan, Félicie (Elle Fanning) has one dream – to go to Paris and become a dancer. Her best friend Victor (Nat Wolff), an imaginative but exhausting boy with a passion for creating, has a dream of his own - to become a famous inventor. In a leap of faith, Victor and Félicie leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions. But – there’s a catch, Félicie must pretend to be the child of a wealthy family in order to gain admittance to the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School in Paris.

And with no professional dance training, she quickly learns that talent alone is not enough to overcome the ruthless, conniving attitudes of her fellow classmates, led by the devious Camille Le Haut (Maddie Ziegler) and her wicked mother Régine (Kate McKinnon). Determined to succeed, Félicie finds her mentor in the tough and mysterious school custodian, Odette (Carly Rae Jepsen) who, along with Victor’s encouraging friendship, help her reach for the stars.

When I was little, I wanted to be a ballerina because of their graceful movements, gorgeous costumes, and the way they stood on their tippy toes on pointe.  Sadly, I have two left feet and dancing is just not something I'm good at.  But I still admire the grace and poise of ballet and have encouraged my girls to develop an appreciation for the art.

I knew Leap! would be a movie that my girls would love as soon as I saw the trailer (both love dressing up in dance costumes and twirling).  Felicie wants to become a ballerina, even though she has had no training, so she sets off to Paris with her friend Victor to follow that dream.  Along the way, she encounters obstacles including a "mean girl".

The movie has many heart-warming moments, a bit of history mixed in (although modern times are mixed with historical), as well as humor that kids will enjoy.  There are great lessons on determination, hard work, friendship, and never giving up on your dreams.

However, there is an essential moral issue in the plot that should have been addressed.  Felicie lies to accomplish her goal of going to dance school, and the writers didn't really deal with this moral problem well.  Despite the fact that Felicie lied, she is still allowed to stay in the class and audition like the other girls.  There was no negative consequence for her lie from the dance teacher.

Lying to get ahead is not a message that I think should be promoted in a positive light.  While I understand everyone deserves second chances, the dance teacher should have clearly addressed her lie and given her a consequence instead of sending a mixed message. He was being kind to her, but he should have made her clean the dance studio after class or given her some other direct consequence for her deception.

The other issue I had with the film was the bully/mean girl situation with Camille.  The writers had a great opportunity to deal with bullying in a very realistic way.  Camille however, has a very quick change of heart towards Felicie, after calling her a "rat", making her feel worthless, and treating her horribly up to that point.

In real life, bullies don't have such a quick turn-around in character and end up being friends after a hug and an apology.  Most times it takes something significant to change a bully, and many times bullies don't change at all.  I wish they had dealt with it differently.

Overall, the setting, quirky characters, inventions, dance moves, and toe-tapping music (love Carly Rae Jensen's "Cut to the Feeling") all make Leap! a fun family adventure. There are also some important life lessons to discuss with your kids too.

Disney Princess PleyBox Unboxing: Rapunzel #sponsored #DisneyPrincess

8/21/17
We received the Disney Princess box from Pley.com in exchange for our honest review. If you purchase through our affiliate link we will receive a commission, but you will not pay anything extra.

Do your kids like getting packages by mail?  Mine sure do. Whenever a box shows up at our house, my girls immediately beg for me to open it.  It's like Christmas when they see a delivery truck!

We recently received our very first Disney Princess subscription box from Pley.  When this pink box showed up at our door, you'd have thought Santa was outside.  That's how excited they were!

What's a Disney Princess PleyBox?

The Disney Princess PleyBox is a bi-monthly subscription that contains official Disney Princess toys, activities, and/or accessories delivered right to your door for just $24.99 (plus the cost of shipping).

Each box tells the story of a different princess and the shipping box itself transforms into a castle, boat or tower that can be decorated and used in creative play.

Rapunzel, subscription box review, Pley.com

The July PleyBox features Rapunzel and contains a Tangled the Series figurine set, paint set, light-up wand, and an activity book.

AK has been obsessed with Tangled since she was a toddler, so she was thrilled to see all of the Rapunzel goodies!

Check out our unboxing video below:

AK's favorite part of this box is the paint set.  One side has a notepad, the other has an envelope to store your masterpieces.  The paint pens work without water so you can start painting right away. It has an easy magnetic closure.

Disney Princess Pleybox, Pleybox, Pley subscription box, unboxing

AB's favorite item is Rapunzel's light-up wand.   The top looks like Rapunzel's magic healing flower.  She loves all things sparkly, and this is perfect to play dress-up!  The on/off switch is a little tiny for younger kids to use, so they may need some help from a parent.

The booklet has a story for your child to read (or read with a parent), coloring pages, a word search, maze and other fun activities.

Disney Princess Pleybox, Pley subscription, subscription box review

The figurines set contains Rapunzel with Pascal, Eugene, Cassandra, Maximus, Fidella and Varian.  They are a good size for little hands and allow kids to use their imagination and act out their own adventures with Rapunzel.

Disney Princess Pleybox, Disney Princess, Rapunzel, Pleybox subscription, unboxing

The shipping box contains pieces for you to put together Rapunzel's tower.  This required a lot of help from a parent.  And since I'm not handy at these kind of assembly projects, it was dad to the rescue!

Luckily there is a helpful youtube video, How to assemble Rapunzel Tower from Disney Pleybox, because the instructions in the activity book were a bit hard to follow.

AB loved playing with the figurines and putting them inside Rapunzel's tower.  Unfortunately, she was able to take it apart too quickly.  So the play value of this only lasted a few minutes.  It's a fun concept, but I think it's geared more toward older kids who don't like to take everything apart like my munchkin.

Overall, my girls loved their first Disney Princess PleyBox and they are already asking when their next mystery box will arrive!

PJ Masks Time to Be a Hero is now on DVD #sponsored #giveaway

8/15/17
I received a copy of PJ Masks Time to be a Hero for review.  This post contains affiliate links. All opinions are mine.

disney junior, disney shows, giveaway, review

My girls are incredibly excited that PJ Masks Time to Be a Hero recently released to DVD!  This series on Disney Junior is a hit with preschoolers and my children and it's easy to see why.        {Who wouldn't want to become a super hero and fight crime at night time as an adorable animal like Catboy, Owlette, and Gekko?}

By day, six-year-olds Connor, Amaya and Greg go to school like everyone else. But when they put on their pajamas and activate their animal amulets, they magically transform into their dynamic superhero alter egos and become the PJ Masks: Catboy, super-fast and agile; Gekko, super strong and able to scale walls; and Owlette, with the power to fly and see great distances. In each episode, the three heroes embark on exciting adventures and work together to solve mysteries and learn valuable lessons along the way.

Available August 8, the latest PJ Masks DVD, PJ MASKS: TIME TO BE A HERO, features six exciting episodes from the top-rated TV series airing on Disney Junior. In addition, the new release includes the PJ Masks “Feeling Great” singalong music video as well as exclusive activity sheets so that little heroes can have even more “super” fun at home.  Specially marked packages will also include an exclusive PJ Masks sticker set!

PJ MASKS: TIME TO BE A HERO DVD Special Features Include:

  • “Feeling Great” Music Video
  • Exclusive Activity Sheets

PJ Masks: Time to be a Hero has 6 episodes plus a music video that your kids will want to watch over and over again! {mine sure have!}

In these episodes, you'll find some great lessons; Owlette learns that two wrongs don't make a right when trying to get back at Night Ninja, and Gekko learns the consequences of not owning up to one's mistakes.

This series is appealing to both boys and girls.  It promotes problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork and kids don't even realize they are learning something!

My girls are also super excited about the free PJ Masks Time to be a Hero app you can download on Google Play!

PJ Masks app, PJ Masks DVD, Disney Junior, Disney Junior shows, preschool shows, giveaway, Disney apps, DisneySMMC, Disney Social Media Moms

Choose your favorite character mask and photograph yourself as Catboy, Owlette or Gekko. Play games and help capture the villains, Romeo, Luna Girl, Night Ninja and the Ninjalinos, who have been let loose around the city. It’s Time to be a Hero! Practice your super powers and help save the day!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul Movie Night Ideas #sponsored #WimpyKid #Wimpykidhe

8/14/17
I received a Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul movie night kit, including the movie, and a gift card to purchase snacks as a Fox Home Insider for review. All opinions are my own.

We are huge fans of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney.  My oldest has read all of the books, and we have watched all of the films together.  Now I am sharing them with my two younger girls.   They were thrilled because we had the opportunity to meet one of the actors, Owen Asztalos, who plays Rowley in the movie! {Click to see our interview with Owen Asztalos}

While the cast has changed since the first few movies (due to the fact that main character actors got older and no longer look like they are in middle school), the same great humor and fun follows this latest film.

Jeff Kinney, movie reviews, books turned into movies

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul is all about a family road trip to visit Meemaw for her birthday.  But as you know with the Heffleys, nothing about this road trip is ordinary or goes exactly as planned.

Greg Heffley has a hidden agenda of his own; he is on a mission to change his reputation on social media as Diaper Hands.  I'll let you find out why.  His parents are hopeful that this road trip will bring them closer together as a family, especially his mom.   The twists and turns on this road trip will have you laughing out loud, and perhaps thinking about your own crazy road trip stories!

I have to admit it took a bit for me to get used to the differences in casting, especially since even the parents were different actors.   I am a fan of Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett and think they were great in their roles, but I missed Steve Zahn as Greg's quirky dad.

If you're a fan of the original cast, you have to look at this with new eyes and kind of a "reboot" of the series.  That being said, it hardly affected my daughters, who watched all of the movies in sequence and laughed through every one.

My favorite scene is most definitely the one in the car where the parents start singing "If You Wanna be my Lover" by the Spice Girls. {So tell me what you want, what you really really want} It's totally hilarious and something my husband and I would do!   (there are a lot of relateable parent moments in this film)

Besides their excitement about seeing Owen in the film, my girls also loved the adorable pig and Greg's little brother Manny.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Long Haul has many heart warming moments and great life lessons:  how telling multiple lies can lead to trouble and it's better to be honest, that family can sometimes drive you crazy, but ultimately they are the people who have your back and love you despite your mistakes.

Have an Epic Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie Night

Jeff Kinney, Wimpy Kid movie night, wimpy kid party, Fox Home Entertainment

We received some amazing movie themed items from 20th Century Fox for our epic "Wimpy Kid-A-Thon" which included a soft fleece blanket, backpacks that turn into lap trays on road trips in the car, Greg Heffley plushes, pencil cases, notepads, and all four films (the original Diary of a Wimpy Kid on HD).

These items helped us plan an epic movie-thon where we watched all four films over the course of a weekend.  Here are some ideas to help you have enjoy your own "Wimpy Kid-A-Thon" at home.

Our family had a blast making all of us into Wimpy characters online.  You can choose what each family member will look like from hair and accessories to a background (although we couldn't choose a shorter character for our toddler for some reason).  These are easily shareable on social media and you can save a copy to your computer.

2.  Make Diary of a Wimpy Kid Photo Props

Download these Wimpy Kid Masks at home and print.  Cut them out, glue to cardboard or in this case we used file folders, and attach a craft or popsicle stick.  And voila!  You can be your favorite Wimpy Kid characters.  These make fun photo props!

3.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie Night Food

Diary of a Wimpy Kid party ideas, Diary of a Wimpy kid movie night, Wimpy Kid food

For dinner, we had some "Cheese Touch Chicken" and rice (my hubby made his cordon-bleu style with ham).  Simply make some baked chicken and add swiss cheese over the top to melt, then cook some cheese rice as a side.

My girls thought it was hilarious that they were eating the cheese touch!

For snacks, we went with a mostly black and white theme: Hershey bars & marshmallows, Junior Mints, white string cheese, oreo cookie dunkers, raisins, greek yogurt dip and veggies (I had to add something healthy), white sports drink, and we shared a Coke with Jeff to toast Jeff Kinney.  (I wish I could find a Coke with my name on it!)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Movie Night Snacks, Diary of a Wimpy Kid party food, Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Long Haul

I had this brilliant idea to draw Greg Heffley on the oreo cookies. But it really isn't as easy as it looks.  My hubby gets the credit for this.  He used black gel to draw a pretty decent likeness (much better than the one I tried with a food-safe marker).

4.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Long Haul Activity Sheets

I printed Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Long Haul activity sheets for the girls to work on after the movie.

These included post card designs for a family road trip, design your own Wimpy Kid cover, a crossword puzzle for my AK, and the game of squares.  They were a lot of fun!
