Inspirational Nursery Rhymes Series: Give Your Toddlers a Positive Self-Image @maxrhymes #sponsored

2/28/17
I received a copy of Get Inspired with Max for review as well as a gift card.  All opinions are mine.

As a parent, it is my job to teach my little ones traditional values like how to be compassionate, kind, responsible, and to treat others the way they want to be treated.  It is also important to me that they have a positive self-image and know that they are deeply loved.

Did you know that 95% of our behavioral patterns are established by age six?  Young children learn these traits in many ways; through examples at home and observing others around them.

One of my favorite ways to inspire learning is through reading books that are relatable to them. Not only is it important for early language, but also for a small child's world view.

Inspirational Nursery Rhymes, Todd and Jackie Courtney, books for toddlers, positive self-image, traditional values

The Inspirational Nursery Rhymes series was written for toddlers to create a positive belief system and self image using adorable animal characters and rhyming text.

Get Inspired with Max by Todd and Jackie Courtney has cute illustrations of Max the mouse, his parents, sister Molly, and his animal friends.

These simple rhymes promote positive thinking, self-worth, creativity, and taking responsibility for ones actions.    According to the authors, these “rhymes are scientifically written to condition the toddler with a positive belief system at the subconscious level. As the child grows, they will be able to draw from this knowledge they learned at an early age and create a path toward success.”

My toddler loved the adorable mice, rabbit, raccoon and koala bear.  She kept pointing to them and saying "awww he's so cute!"  While the concepts may be a little above her understanding as a two-year-old, I know that it is laying a good foundation toward learning those important values.  My six year old has more of an understanding and we were able to discuss what she thought each poem meant.

There are four books so far in the series, and my girls are eager to read more of them.  The Inspirational Nursery Rhymes Series is a wonderful tool for parents that provides great examples and encourages positive thinking and making good choices.

Where to Buy:

Get Inspired with Max is available on Amazon for $8.99 and comes with a free e-book copy.

Zoonicorn Plush and Storybook #Zoonicorn #Sponsored

2/24/17
I received Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns and two plush for review.  All opinions are mine.

Both of my daughters love reading imaginative stories and playing pretend.  When a story has a cute and cuddly animal to make the story come alive, they are even more excited and eager to read!

We recently discovered a book called Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns and the coordinating adorable plush Zoonicorn.  What's a Zoonicorn you say?

Well, a Zoonicorn is a magical creature that is part unicorn and part zebra.  There are four Zoonicorns, each one with a different color and different traits.  Each plush is about 7" tall, with white and colored stripes, a tuff of hair on its head and tail, and has an attached tag with its name.

The Zoonicorn family includes:

children's books, plush animals, Buffy Meets the ZoonicornsValeo (Blue): The Zoonicorn leader who overcomes his shyness when meeting new friends and loves hanging out with his buddies near the Africa exhibits!
children's books, Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns

Promithea (Purple): Reliable and shy, Promithea epitomizes intelligence and gentleness and is the perfect secret keeper for all of her pals.
Children's books, Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns, plush animals
Aliel (Pink): Spunky, fun, and always zooming at full speed, Aliel is friends with every animal at the zoo and makes a great companion for any child too!
Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns, childrens books, plush animals
Ene (Green): A charming practical joker who loves mischief and his naps! Great for snuggling when catching some Z’s.

These cuddly pals were like magnets with my two girls.  They cuddled them right away and couldn't wait to read more about them!

Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns, cuddly plush, stuffed animals, kids apps, kids plush, children's books

In Buffy Meets the Zoonicorns, a young bison named Buffy finds herself feeling restless in her zoo enclosure. She wants the freedom that the older animals have. Her mother sings her a magical lullaby to help her fall asleep.  Buffy drifts off and dreams about a herd of Zoonicorns; magical creatures that are part unicorn and part zebra. There she is free and can play with the zoonicorns but she misses her family.  When she wakes up next to her mom again, she is glad to be home and is more at peace.

Zoonicorn, Kids apps, Zoonicorn app, Zoonicorn plush, Zoonicorn book, kids books, children's books, kids apps

I love the positive messages of acceptance, belonging, and contentment in this book!  It is great for younger children from toddlers to more independent readers (about second grade).  The illustrations feature soft, soothing tones.

kids books, children's books, Zoonicorn plush, Zoonicorn app, Zoonicorn book, kids plush

The story was a little long to keep my toddler's full attention, but she eagerly played with her Zoonicorn while listening.  My oldest is in Kindergarten and is absolutely obsessed with unicorns, so it was the perfect choice for us to read together (Plus our local zoo has a bison for a mascot, so she thought that was pretty neat too).

The story is great to read before bedtime, as your little ones can snuggle with their Zoonicorn and look forward to joining them in dreamland!
The Zoonicorn website has a parent section and store as well as a kids section.  In the kids section, independent readers can read more magical stories, plus download printable activities and coloring pages.
If you download the Zoonicorn Apps, the app will read the stories out-loud to your child and they can play educational games.  The kid-friendly story and game apps are available on both Android and IOS through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
children's books, kids apps, Buffy and the Zoonicorns, kids plush

I use the apps as incentive to clean up at the end of the day.  The girls aren't fond of cleaning up, but if they have the app to look forward to afterward, they are more willing to help.  The games are easy enough that my toddler can play, but not so easy that my six year old gets bored.
The Zoonicorns plush have been a huge hit at our house!  Besides their obvious cuteness, they encourage imaginative play and are great companions for any time of day.  Plus the interactive apps are a big bonus!
Which Zoonicorn would your child choose?

Upcycled Lacing Card Craft {Book Extension Activity} #ChickfilamomsDIY

2/20/17
As part of the Chick-fil-A Moms Panel, I received a coupon for soup to use in this upcycled soup container craft. All opinions are mine.

Signs of spring are starting to show here in Pennsylvania.  One of our favorite things to do in spring is visit a farm and see the new baby animals.  We also read some great books about animals and do some fun extension activities with my two girls.

One of our favorite books is Barnyard Song by Rhonda Gowler Greene, illustrated by Robert Bender.  My preschooler loves making all the barnyard animal noises!   One of her favorite animals is the cow, and what do you know, I'm a Chick-fil-A mom!  The mom panel was recently challenged to come up with an idea to upcycle a chicken tortilla soup container.

DIY Lacing Card, cow crafts, kids crafts, fine motor skills activities, book extension crafts, barnyard song

I took AB's love for cows and came up with a DIY Lacing Card with her favorite animal.   Lacing cards are great fine motor skill practice and are fun to take along on car trips or doctor's appointments to keep your preschooler occupied.  My six year old even enjoys it!

Here are the steps to make your own cow themed Lacing Card Upcycled Craft {Book Extension Activity}:

DIY Lacing Card, cow crafts, kids crafts, fine motor skills activities, book extension crafts, barnyard song

Materials:
One Chick-Fil-A chicken tortilla soup container
Modpodge
White Glitter Glue (we chose Glow-in-the-dark)
White Acrylic Paint
Paper Plate
Drill with small bit
Small paintbrush
Cow template
Scissors
Shoelaces

Step 1:  Wash out the soup container and let air dry.

Step 2:  Drill the holes for lacing around the sides of the soup container.  These can be spaced however you wish.

Step 3:  Print and cut out the face from the cow template (I downloaded and resized to 300x409 in picmonkey.com and cut off the horns).  Then color with crayons and paint over it with white glitter glue (you will want to do a thin layer so it isn't lumpy).  Let dry completely.

Step 4:  Paint the base of the container with white acrylic paint allowing for black cow spots.  The photo below is one coat. Ours took 3 coats; let paint dry about an hour between each coat.

Book extension activities, books about cows, cow crafts, chick-fil-A soup container

Step 5:  Paint white glitter glue over the white areas on all sides.  This provides texture and sparkle.  If you use glow-in-the-dark glitter glue, it is even more fun (though to have a really dark glow, you will need to do several light coats)!  Let dry overnight.

Step 6:   Attach the cow face to the bottom of the base using modpodge.  There is a square gap in the base, so your cow will need to fit over the gap.  Allow an hour or two to dry completely.

DIY Lacing Card, cow lacing card, book extension activity, repurpose plastic

Step 7:  Your child is ready to begin lacing.  It's best to start a hole from the inside of the container so that your lace will end inside and can be stored with the lid sealed on top.  You can store other colored laces too.

I hope you enjoy making this Upcycled Lacing Card Craft/Book Extension Activity with your preschoolers.  It can be used with other books about farm animals too.

PBS Kids Valentines Day DVD's & Printable Valentines Plus #Giveaway #PBSKids #sponsored

2/10/17
I received PBS Kids Valentines Day DVD's for review.  All opinions are mine.

Valentine's Day is a fun holiday, especially this year as my oldest is in Kindergarten.  It is the very first time that she gets to give Valentines to her friends and write them all by herself.  She couldn't be more thrilled (or proud of herself)!

Daniel Tiger, Dinosaur Train, Wordworld

To celebrate, we are reading lots of great books together as well as Valentine's Day themed movies and shows.  Thanks to PBS Kids, we have three new DVD's from some of our favorite PBS shows to add to our collection.

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood:  Would You Be Mine?

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, PBS Kids, Valentine's Day

WOULD YOU BE MINE?” features eight stories including “It’s Love Day!” and “Daniel’s Love Day Surprise.” In “It’s Love Day,” Daniel makes special heart cards to bring to school and hand out. While at school, some of the kids explain how they like to say “I love you” to their friends and family – Prince Wednesday likes to sing, and Miss Elaina likes to give hugs.

In the story “Daniel’s Love Day Surprise,” Daniel helps his mom make a special heart-shaped pizza and finds a way to show Grandpere how much he loves him by setting up a special treasure hunt just for him featuring sparkling purple hearts. The SRP for this DVD is $12.99.

I grew up watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.  Daniel Tiger is a modern animated series inspired by the magic of the original classic.  This cuddly tiger is not only cute, but he helps little ones learn something new in every show from potty training, and dealing with new siblings, to sharing and making new friends.

PBS Kids, 2015 White House Easter Egg Roll, GimmeFive, Michelle Obama, President Obama, DC monuments

This Valentine's DVD is all about love.  My girls enjoyed learning about "love day" and the fun ways we can show love to our family and friends.  And since AK loves Daniel Tiger, we looked back on one of our special memories together as a family, the 2015 White House Easter Egg Roll where she met him.

Free Printable Daniel Tiger Valentines:

Dinosaur Train:  I Love Dinosaurs
Dinosaur Train, PBS Kids, Valentine's Day

Two of the four stories included on this DVD are “King Meets Crystal” and “Erma and the Conductor.” In “King Meets Crystal,” King Cryolophosaurus is interested in meeting Crystal, but he’s nervous to talk to her. Can Mr. Conductor, Mrs. Pteranodon, Buddy, and Tiny help King overcome his nervousness?

In “Erma and the Conductor,” the Pteranodon family is on the Dinosaur Train headed to the Big Pond to watch a meteor shower! Mr. Conductor stops to pick up Erma Eoraptor. At the Big Pond, the Conductor and Erma are interrupted a few times while trying to be alone, but soon find the perfect spot back on the Train. The SRP for this DVD is $6.99.

There's just something about dinosaurs that captures children's imagination.  Dinosaur Train is another of our favorite series with catchy music and great lessons.  AK loved looking back at the Library of Congress 2013 National Book Festival where we were able to interact with lots of PBS Kids characters, including Buddy.

Dinosaur Train, PBS Kids, Library of Congress National Book Festival

Free Printable Dinosaur Train Valentines:

WordWorld:  Be My Valentine

WordWorld, PBS Kids, Valentines Day

This DVD includes five stories, two of which are Valentine’s Day themed. “My Fuzzy Valentine” features Sheep working to create a valentine song for her best friend Bear. Unfortunately she has trouble finding just the right rhyme to finish her song. With help from Fly, she uncovers the perfect rhyme and makes Bear a valentine with real heart.

In “Love, Bug,” Bug wants to sign a valentine for his favorite WordFriend, but doesn’t know how to write his name. With lots of encouragement from Frog he learns that with a little practice he can write his name and give his valentine. The SRP for this DVD is $6.99.

WordWorld makes spelling and learning sight words fun!  AK loves pointing out the words she recognizes from school.  Building those fundamental reading skills is so important and this makes it interactive and exciting for her.

PBS Kids, WordWorld, Daniel Tiger, Dinosaur Train

You can count on PBS Kids to continue bringing great content that kids love this Valentine's Day!  You can find each of these DVD titles at pbskids.com.
