Dutch Wonderland Summer Fun #DWFamilyFun #sponsored

6/26/14
I will receive tickets in exchange for this post, visiting Dutch Wonderland and reviewing my family's experience there.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Dutch Wonderland, family amusement parks

I am thrilled to announce that I have been chosen as one of Dutch Wonderland's summer bloggers for the 2014 season!  We've visited Dutch Wonderland once before during the fall {read about our Happy Hauntings experience here} and had a blast.

Now that The Attic Baby is three and a half, we are excited to see how she reacts to this family amusement park aptly named a "Kingdom for Kids."

Dutch Wonderland is a great day trip for locals {approx. 2 hours from my area south of Baltimore} but also out-of-state visitors too.  There are places to stay close by, including a campground.   There is also a variety of things to do for families of young children including shows, rides just for the kids, family rides, and a water play area {Duke's Lagoon} to cool off during those hot summer days.

We will be visiting the park soon and can't wait to see the all new Exploration Island.

Exploration Island features a Dino Dig, Prehistoric Path with animatronic dinos, a Gondola Cruise and the relocated Turnpike.

We'll be checking out all these fun attractions during our visit and give you the inside scoop!

Just follow along on Twitter @atticgirl76, Facebook, or Instagram and #DWFamilyFun and look for a review post here on the blog soon.

And don't forget to follow Dutch Wonderland's social media channels for updates, ticket deals, and contests:

Best Buy's Graduation Gifts for Your #GreatestGrad #sponsored

6/19/14
The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free

Graduation gifts
It's hard to believe that it's June already and that Graduation season is in full swing.  My son has friends who are graduating and in a couple of years he will be too {that's something I'd rather not think about quite yet}.

I've also received invitations to Graduation parties from former students that I taught when they were only third graders. {sniff sniff, I remember how little they used to be!}  The challenge is choosing just the right gift to buy for the graduate in your life.  Although money is always a welcome graduation gift, I like to buy gifts that are little more personalized.

Whether you're looking for the grad who's moving out on their own, a techie grad, or a fitness fanatic, Best Buy has a great selection of graduation gifts.

Most of the grads I know are big time techies.  They want the latest and greatest gadgets to be constantly connected to friends and family near and far away.  That connection is so important if you are going away to college.

Personally, my favorite techie gift is the iPhone 5S.  It has all the great features you could want in a phone: Touch ID fingerprint sensor, 8MP iSight camera with True Tone Flash, 1080p HD video recording, and a FaceTime HD camera.    And currently it's under $100 with a 2 year contract; you can't beat that!  {I wish I had one of these myself!}

Other Techie/Networker Grad Gift Ideas:
  • iPhone 5s
  • Lenovo Yoga 2 13" Touch-Screen Laptop
  • SONOS Play:1 Wireless Speaker for Streaming Music
  • SanDisk Connect 32GB USB 2.0 Wireless Flash Drive

About The Lego Movie

The LEGO® Movie, the first-ever, full-length theatrical LEGO® adventure, directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller is an original 3D computer animated story that follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.
Chris Pratt (Moneyball) stars as the voice of Emmet. Will Ferrell (The Campaign) stars as the voice of his primary adversary, President Business, an erudite, anal-retentive CEO who has a hard time balancing world domination with micro-managing his own life; while Liam Neeson (Taken) voices the president's powerful henchman, known as Bad Cop, who will stop at nothing to catch Emmet.
Starring as Emmet's fellow travelers are Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), as Vitruvius, an old mystic; Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Emmy nominee for 30 Rock), as tough-as-nails Lucy, who mistakes Emmet for the savior of the world and guides him on his quest; Will Arnett (Emmy nominee, 30 Rock), as the mysterious Batman, a LEGO minifigure with whom Lucy shares a history; Nick Offerman (NBC's Parks and Recreation) as a craggy, swaggering pirate, obsessed with revenge on President Business; and Alison Brie (Community) as a sweet, loveable member of the team, with a powerful secret.

Keeping Your Kids Safe Online #CyberTribe #Sponsored #MC

I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for BGCA. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

Having a teenager at home, I am always concerned about his safety when he is online.  We've had lots of conversations about online privacy and not sharing personal information on social networks.  We've also put parental controls on handheld devices like his tablet and computer.  And we've implemented rules about his cell phone.  (One of the biggest rules we have is that he must share his passwords with us.)  But since technology is always changing and new sites are popping up, it's difficult as parents to keep up with all the changes.  Let's face it.  Our teens are probably smarter than we are in this area.

Not only that, but there's also the hot topic of cyber bullying.  When we were kids, it was unheard of for people to instantly share photos, video and messages.  It's so important to teach our kids that cyber bullying will not be tolerated and that they need to communicate with an adult if they fall victim to it.   Open communication with teens is sometimes difficult, but we need to constantly keep the conversation going, even if it seems they aren't listening.

teen cyber safety

BGCA in partnership with Sprint is helping parents talk to their teens about Cyber Safety with the Cyber Tribe, a group of teen experts who can questions about mobile device safety, texting, online privacy, personal data sharing, and cyberbullying.

Each week in June, you can check back to the site for updates.  When submitting a question, you are also entered to win an iPad mini and $500 to the Boys & Girls Club of your choice!

To submit your questions to the CyberTribe:
  • Visit the BGCA CyberSafe site
  • Visit the "Ask the CyberTribe" tab
  • Click “Ask now”
  • Write in your question, fill out your information (First Name, Last initial, City, and State)
  • Click “Submit”
  • After hitting submit you will be given the change to enter the CyberSafe Futures Giveaway.

There are also some great resources for moms and dads to come up with their own Cyber Safety rules and printable discussion cards to open up conversations with their not only teens, but also younger children.

My personal favorite is the Cyber Safe Glossary; you can find terms surrounding the latest digital technology and trends.  It's especially helpful for parents who aren't familiar with such things as chat acronyms and online gaming terms.

Are you a Cyber Smart parent?    You can take the Cyber Smart Parent Quiz to see how Cyber Smart you really are.

I hope you'll check out all these important resources and have a conversation with your kids today about Cyber Safety.

When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence DVD Giveaway #sponsored

6/4/14
Thank you to Edify Media for giving me a review copy of When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence. All opinions are my own.

Janette Oke, Hallmark Channel series

I recently reviewed When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence on DVD.  It contains episodes 5 & 6 from the hit series When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel.

Synopsis:

When Calls the Heart “A Telling Silence” is produced and directed by Michael Landon Jr. and inspired by the best-selling books by Janette Oke.   A feature length film made from episodes of the When Calls the Heart television series, When Calls the Heart “A Telling Silence” tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young high society teacher fighting to make a difference in a prairie town in a part of the Western Frontier known as Coal Valley.   Almost immediately, she can tell that something is wrong.     The church was burned to the ground a month after a local mining accident and the only man left to investigate the crime is the Canadian Mountie, Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing).  Meanwhile, the head of the mine is scheming to control the town, including the pastor who seems to be losing his faith along with his church.   The stakes are raised when a young girl goes missing and the town must come together to find her.

And guess what?  I recently was given a copy to give away to a lucky reader!

When Calls the Heart A Telling Silence DVD #sponsored

Thank you to Edify Media for giving me a review copy of When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence.  This post contains affiliate links.

Janette Oke, Hallmark Channel series

Are you a fan of the series on the Hallmark Channel called When Calls the Heart?    In case you need to catch up, here are the episodes released:

When Calls the Heart (debut movie)
When Calls the Heart:  Lost & Found
When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence
When Calls the Heart:  The Dance
When Calls the Heart: Second Chances
When Calls the Heart: Change of Heart
When Calls the Heart: Rules of Engagement

The third title in the series distributed by Word Entertainment, When Calls the Heart: A Telling Silence, is now available on DVD.  It contains episodes 3 & 4 from Season 1 of the series.

Suspicion is cast on one of Elizabeth's friends in the investigation into how the town's church burned down. Alongside that, one of Elizabeth's students goes missing.  And the head of the mine (who I like to term the town "bully") is manipulative and tries to take over how things are run in town. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but there are many things that keep you guessing right until the end.

The story line is compelling and the plot has a great pace And yes, it is more of a "chick flick" type series, but one that you don't have to worry about content around your kids with good "old fashioned" values.  There's action, some clean romance, and great life lessons about faith, truthfulness, friendship, and family.  And the acting is truly superb; I love the cast!

I can't wait until they release episodes 5 & 6 on June 17th When Calls the Heart:  The Dance.  And did you hear? They renewed the series for a second season.  If you're a fan, follow #hearties on twitter for all the latest buzz!
