Introducing The Beatrix Girls Coming 10/14! #TBGVIP #sponsored

9/30/13
I am a Beatrix Girls VIP Blogger and received a doll for review purposes.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

dolls, holiday gifts

This summer I was invited to be a VIP blogger for a new line of collectable dolls called The Beatrix Girls.  As a big doll fan, I'm excited to get to share these amazing girls with my readers before they come out in stores Oct. 14th!

These are not your average 12" dolls.  They are not only cute and fashionable, they are also musicians with distinct personalities.

These dolls live and interact in the human world—producing real music, real hits, and real fans. Kids can collect their music, join their fan club, and vicariously live the fantasy of being a pop-star through play.

The girls have a fun website featuring their individual bios, original pop music and videos about their adventures.

The Beatrix Girls
Meet The Beatrix Girls:

• Brayden:Hey, I’m Brayden: I was born in Hollywood California and my brain is always bursting with new song ideas, which is why I’m not just the lead guitarist but also the main song writer for The Beatrix Girls. I write songs that reflect real life experiences, friendship, and lessons like standing up for who you are. My passions are music and the environment! My friends and I are the hottest act in the world, but most importantly, we are great friends who care about each other and the world around us. I love to dress in stylish minis, sky-high heels and lots of jewelry. I mix those with geometric prints, clashing patterns and lots of soft bold metallic and leather. My style is different and edgy with a cross-over appeal.

The Beatrix Girls
Ainsley:Hi. I’m Ainsley and I’m from the deep-south, but I’m definitely not a typical southern girl. I am a charming southern belle and can be quiet as a church mouse when we sip mint juleps together on the porch, but put me behind a drum set and I turn into a Riot Grrrl. My passion for drumming, coupled with a lot of hard work, got me the gig with my three best friends, as the drummer for The Beatrix Girls! I love the “modern antique” look. I favor rich, feminine fabrics like laces, florals and brocades cut into modern silhouettes that highlight my figure. I channel classic Southern Belle with my corsets hats and gloves, but I’m thoroughly modern in how I put it all together.

The Beatrix Girls
Lark:I’m from Boston, okay? I live my life by three B’s: Beans, BoSox and Bass Guitar. Now I’ve added a fourth B... Beatrix. Aside from my love of music, I LOVE extreme sports - surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding - I’m a champ! I’m often referred to as the “rocker chick” of the group. I’m a bit grungy, a little bit punk. My passion for sports and music has not only won me many competitions, but it earned me my spot as the lead bass player with my three best friends! I like layers and ripped up jeans by day, and by night I like appropriating boys’ looks into feminine hot outfits. Combat boots with frilly dresses, skinny jeans with suspenders, sneakers with everything. I avoid pinks and other bright colors, but then again, with my fiery hair, I don’t need much color from my clothes.

The Beatrix Girls
Chantal:I am Chantal and I come from Montreal Canada. I speak Fran├žais and English. I play the keyboard and sing. People say I’m “mellow”, logical and level headed, but I am often... “bent out of shape”... by the silly things people say and do. When this happens I am likely to “flip out.” I love to play the piano and sing, and I work very hard at both. I’m a snappy dresser and typically stick to the classics. I love the clean, mod look of the 50s. I like to wear soft, subtle silk blouses and dark, tight, Capri type pants or mini skirts with fishnet stockings. I like high heeled shoes, but not too spiky. I like to wear my silver bracelets and a slinky silver necklace.

We were sent red-haired beauty Lark who plays the Bass guitar.  The guitar is not included with the doll; I imagine accessory packs will be available after they hit stores.

The Beatrix Girls

These dolls are recommended for ages 4-6+.  Since my daughter is a little below that age group but loves playing with "big girl" dolls, I removed the small pieces (bangle bracelet & shoes).

Lark has big green eyes, a spunky layered haircut, freckles, and wears a stylish tutu-style dress over leggings and high heeled boots.   You'll notice right away that her head is very large in comparison to her body, but that is what makes these dolls so unique.  Lark's jointed arms and legs bend and twist in a way I haven't seen on other 12" dolls, allowing you to put her in lots of different positions.

The Attic Baby was so excited to play with Lark!  She undressed her, dressed her again, played with her very long layered hair, and put her in a doll car to ride all over the living room.  After play, we checked out the website and my almost-three-year-old music loving girl was enamored with The Beatrix Girls.

Your girls are sure to adore these dolls that teach about the values of empowerment, friendship, hard work and determination.  And moms will like them too because of their positive message encouraging girls to have big dreams, reach for success, and believe in yourself.

The Beatrix Girls are sure to be a hit of the 2013 Holiday Season!

Where to Buy:

The Beatrix Girls will be available in October 2013 in major retail stores like: Toys R’ Us and Justice for $24.99.

Welch's Share Your Moments Photo Contest #Sharewhatsgood #sponsored

9/29/13
Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Welch's. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Welch’s believes in the magic of “kitchen table” moments, and has been helping families enjoy them for generations. In the time it takes to drink a glass of juice or share a sandwich, a special moment can happen.

That’s why Welch’s launched a new movement called “Share what’s good™”. It’s all about sharing those special moments that occur each day with family, friends and loved ones – whether it’s at home or on the go.

At Sharewhatsgood.com you’ll find a variety of great content from fun family ideas to yummy recipes. You can share photos of your every-day moments and see how others are doing the same.

It can be difficult to get my family all together in a photo that captures a favorite moment.  Most of the time we take turns behind the camera and photograph our kids.  But I chose this one of my daughter's first baseball game at Camden Yards.   It's definitely one of my favorites because we are all smiling!

Share Your Moments Photo Contest:

As part of the Share what’s good campaign, Welch’s has launched the “Share Your Moments” photo contest

Sanus and Safe Kids TV Safety Initiative #sponsored

9/26/13
Disclosure:  Thanks to Sanus for providing a wall mount to review.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Like many homes in the US, we own a flat panel tv as a great way to enjoy family time and entertainment.  However, a lot of parents are unaware of the safety risks that flat panel TVs pose for kids.

Safe Kids TV Safety Initiative

Did you know?

Due to increasing size and ultra thin designs, today’s flat panel TVs can easily tip over when bumped or pulled, toppling off of furniture and causing injury or even death.

SANUS, the leading designer and manufacturer of flat panel TV wall mounts, has partnered with Safe Kids Worldwide to bring this risk to attention.  By educating consumers on the risk of unsecured flat panel TV’s, SANUS and Safe Kids Worldwide offer safe solutions for families across the nation by reducing TV tip-over related injuries and fatalities.

A 2011 US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report on flat panel TV safety revealed:

·         A child is killed every three weeks from an unsecured TV

·         Every 45 minutes a child visits an emergency room due to a TV tip-over related injury

·         Between 2000 and 2011, 215 fatalities have resulted from TV tip-over

·         An estimated 17,000 people each year, the majority of which are children, are treated for injuries from TV tip-overs

·         Reported cases have increased almost 25% from 2006  to 2010, and over the last 10 years, injuries have increased by 31%

These statistics are staggering and should make you think about how your tv is secured.   Our flat panel tv was securely screwed into a our entertainment stand, but we have thought a lot about mounting our tv so that it is out of reach of our curious tot.

We recently received a Sanus Vuepoint F180 Full-Motion Tv Wall Mount to review.  It allows you to adjust the angle to an 11 degree tilt for easy viewing and supports up to 130 lbs on a 47"-70" flat panel tvIts full range of movement allows smooth extend, tilt, swivel and roll motions up to 14" from the wall without the use of tools.

flat panel tv safety

My hubby tackled putting this together since I am not very skilled in this area.  I think it took him about 2 hours total once he watched the video installation walk-through, laid out all his hardware, and planned out where to put the mount on the wall (it was his first time doing this so maybe it'll be quicker if you have more experience with this).

SANUS TV Mounting Tips:

Easy 1, 2, 3 installation with a wall template to ensure even placement

  • Online video walkthrough of simple installation available at any time
  • No additional tools necessary – all required installation hardware is included in package
  • Live customer support available 6 days a week

The final result looks great and we can see our tv from either side of the living room as well as from our kitchen breakfast nook.  I love that you can tilt it with just the push of a finger and slide it from side to side.   Since we have skylights in our living room, it's nice to be able to angle the tv so that there isn't a lot of glare.

But most of all, I'm glad that it is safely out of reach from our two year old.  We still have a baby gate around the entertainment stand and until our next project of hiding the cords is completed.

Securing your tv is an important safety message for all parents and Sanus makes it easy to do that.

Where to Buy:

You can find the Sanus Vuepoint for $149 at Walmart.

What about you:  How have you secured your flat panel tv?

Sofia the First: Ready to be a Princess DVD #sponsored

9/20/13
Disclosure:  I received a copy of the DVD for review purposes.  All opinions are my own.

If you have a little girl, you are probably familiar with Disney Junior's latest hit show Sofia the First.  She's an adorable little girl who becomes a Princess when her mother marries the King.  Sofia isn't used to being royalty and has to learn how to fit into her new role as a step-sister and Princess.

Disney Junior

In the lastest DVD Sofia the First: Ready to be a Princess releasing Sept. 17th, Sofia is eager to prove she can be a true princess.  You'll visit an enchanted circus, meet a pet dragon and soar through desert skies with Sofia and Amber on a magic carpet ride!  But when their high-flying adventure veers off course, it’s special guest Princess Jasmine to the rescue with inspiring advice about trying new things, staying strong and trusting yourself.

Episodes: (110 minutes)

                       1- "A Royal Mess"
                       2- "The Shy Princess"
                       3 - "Blue Ribbon Bunny"
                       4 - "The Princess Test"
5 - “Two To Tangu” (Jasmine Episode)

My daughter was incredibly excited when this DVD arrived!  There is a Dress Up Kit included with a paper wardrobe and a dress-up Sofia paper doll.  You can put 6 different dress clings onto the doll to change her outfits.  She loved changing out her dresses while she watched her favorite Disney Princess episodes!

Sofia the First is one of my daughter's favorite shows.   Not only are there princesses, magic, great songs, and adventure, but each show features strong character qualities and lessons about friendship, being yourself, and kindness towards others.   Those are features that make this show so endearing.

tv shows, Fox Home Entertainment
Available on Blu-ray & DVD September 24

In Season 4, we watched as Haley went off to college and Lily had her first day of Kindergarten. These are two big steps that are often very hard for parents to handle. Here is some advice for all of those modern parents out there who are going through these transitional stages with their families.

The laughs – and the awards – just keep on coming for the #1-rated “Modern Family,” winner of three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series! With Jay and Gloria’s baby on the way and Haley going off to college, the entire Pritchett/Dunphy clan faces some major surprises as they bicker and bond over house-flipping headaches, unwanted play dates, and everything from hot-tempered hormones to in utero karaoke. Featuring a stellar array of guest stars including Matthew Broderick, Shelley Long and Elizabeth Banks, Season Four takes a heartfelt and laugh-out-lough hilarious look at what it means to be a “Modern Family.”

Set Guidelines
Fox Home Entertainment

Before you send off your precious son or daughter to fend for their selves in college, make sure you clearly discuss guidelines. Remind them that even though you are not there to set specific rules, they are still responsible for their actions. Claire and Phil certainly know what it’s like when your daughter calls you one night because they’ve been caught doing illegal things by the police.

Prepare Your Little One

Fox Home Entertainment

Kindergarten is a huge step for your little one! Make sure they are prepared for their big day by giving them a basic educational foundation and teaching them to play well with others. When Lily heads off to kindergarten and gets in a tousle on her first day, Cam and Mitchell are put in a very awkward situation. No parent wants to be in the same situation!

Communication is Key
Fox Home Entertainment

Set up specific times to continue growing as a family. There is a fine line between suffocating your college kid and staying informed about what’s going on in their life. Many families will select a certain time, for instance Sunday afternoons, to have family phone calls and catch up on the week’s happenings, even if they have talked throughout the week. Just because your son or daughter has moved out, it does not mean that your relationship has to suffer! In fact, sometimes parent-child relationships grow once the kid has left for college.

Distract Yourself
Fox Home Entertainment

Plan a fun activity for yourself right after dropping your son of in his college dorm room or leaving your daughter for the first day of kindergarten. Have a distraction for yourself so that you don’t find yourself at home looking through photo albums and wondering “how did the time go by so quickly?” These steps are exciting, but certainly emotional and you don’t want to wallow in your sorrows.

Show You Care
Fox Home Entertainment

No matter what age your child is, make sure you are sharing in their excitement! Whether you have a kindergartener bringing home a painting or a college student signing up for campus activities, ask them questions about their life and listen to their answers. Celebrate with them when they ace an exam or learn to count to 20.
