This summer has been a bit strange.  We've had quite a lot of rain, and as a result, have had quite a bit of a mosquito problem in our yard.   Between the rain, the mosquitoes biting us, and some days of hot heat indexes, we haven't gotten outside as much as I'd like.

When we do get outside, it's usually in the early morning or later in the day when it's cooler and the sun is not as intense.

I was excited to plan a playdate and share our Coppertone WaterMoms "Great American Summer" kit:

The day we chose for our playdate was a hot one; almost 90 degrees in the morning.  I had the baby pool all set up and the water table with fun toys in the shadiest part of the yard.  We slathered our preschoolers with Waterbabies SPF 50 lotion, paying careful attention to make sure cheeks, face, nose, ears and neck were covered before heading outside.  {did you know you need to apply at least 15 minutes before sun exposure?  Click here for more sunscreen tips}

The little sticks of sunscreen are great for quickly applying to a squirmy preschooler's face!   {and easy to throw in your purse or diaper bag on-the-go}

They played in the pool for a bit and then moved to the water table.  But they only lasted about 20-25 minutes in the heat before wanting to go inside to cool off and have some indoor play.

Our play date, though shorter than expected, was fun & our fair-skinned munchkins didn't burn.  {We love our Coppertone!}

If you're looking for some fun snacks for your next play date on a hot summer day, check these out:

Summertime Strawberry Lemonade
  • 1 liter lemonade
  • 1 cup strawberries, sliced or 1 cup raspberries
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • Ice
Combine sliced strawberries/raspberries and sugar in a bowl.  Using a fork, mash the berries into the sugar, leaving some large chunks.  Chill for 1 hr.  In a large pitcher, combine the berry mixture, lemonade, and the water and stir.  Add ice then serve!

Beach Sand Pudding Cups

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant pudding mix
  • 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
  • 1 (12 ounce) package vanilla water cookies, crushed
  • Variety of candy toppings to decorate
Combine milk and pudding mix in a large bowl.  Beat with a whisk until well blended, then let stand for 5 minutes.  Add in whipped topping and half of crushed cookies and fold in.  Place 1tbsp. crushed cookies into each cup, then fill each cup 3/4 of the way full with pudding mixture.  Top with remaining crushed cookies.  Refrigerate for at least 1 hr.  Decorate with fun toppings such as gummy worms, gummy sharks, gummy fish, paper umbrellas or get creative!
