Thomas NelsonMy daughter is in love with anything girly, especially princesses.  She tells me all the time, "Mommy I princess."   And I love to have a girly girl around the house!  I knew that this month's second book selection would be perfect for her  (see the other May book selection here)
This adorable pink glittery book is in the shape of a purse and has a handle for little hands that closes with velcro.  (a princess has to have a cute accessory after all)  It has cardstock type pages which makes it less easy to tear for little ones.

My Princess Bible Purse introduces your princesses age 2-5 to godly characteristics taken from Galatians 5:22-23:

"But the spirit gives love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control."

These are all wonderful qualities that we wish to develop in our children, aren't they?  Each quality is explained on a level that young children can understand.   You can get a sneak peek inside with this online flipbook.

I love that it teaches character and qualities that all little "princesses" should have.  And its portability makes it a cute accessory for play time!

My Princess Bible Purse is available on the Thomas Nelson website for $9.99.

The Promise Box Q&A and Facebook Party

5/28/13
Disclosure:  This is not a compensated post.  I am a member of the Tricia Goyer Fiction Launch Team and am posting for my readers' enjoyment. I received a copy of the book for an upcoming review.

Q & A with Author Tricia Goyer

Tricia Goyer, Amish fiction
In celebration of the release of The Promise Box, Tricia Goyer recently answered some great questions from readers:

Laurel Thomas: How do you pick Bible verses for your books?

Each of my books has a theme. In fact this is the first thing I figure out with all of my books. For example, in
The Promise Box my focus was “truth.” Throughout the book the Scriptures I picked spoke truth into a character's situation. Many of the Scripture verses in the books were ones that spoke to my life. They are seeds of truth I've planted within my own life that find themselves on the page.

Laurel Thomas: Do you actually try the dishes that characters eat?

I have tried some of the Amish recipes. I've made whoopie pies and some of the other treats. But some things I've tasted from Amish restaurants and I didn't make . . . but I haven't had anything that I didn’t like! The Amish have very good taste!

Sarah Reed Levels: How do the Amish deal with adoption?

The Amish deal with adoption just like anyone else. They have to follow the same laws and go through the same processes. Adoption isn't common, but it does happen in the Amish community.

Jalynn Patterson: How do you pick characters for your books?

I had to think about this question for a while because the characters seem to pick me! When I get the idea, the people sort of show up. When I first thought of The Promise Box I immediately saw Lydia with her red hair blowing in the breeze as she drove up to the West Kootenai.

I do have a “characters” board on Pinterest, and I do find inspiration after looking at faces and expressions:
http://pinterest.com/triciagoyer/characters/

When I was thinking about The Promise Box, this image really stood out to me as Lydia: http://pinterest.com/pin/108156828523843059/

I felt her uncertainty and vulnerability, and that came out on the page.

Jalynn Patterson: How do you come up with a storyline? Do you have a process you go through?

My process.

The title of the book usually comes first and the general idea of what will happen. The characters soon follow, and they're usually dragging BAGGAGE. I use a lot of baggage in my books: past pain, hurt relationships, burdens, and regrets.

Then I think about the theme. For The Promise Box, it was TRUTH. Any time my characters grew in truth, walked toward truth, and turned to Jesus—our TRUTH—then things went well. Any time they focused on lies or mistruth, then things got hard for them. Just coming to this realization helps me shape the main plot points of my novel.

Since I have two characters they will each have their own struggles, but they will both deal with the same theme. Lydia needed to discover the truth of her birth. Gideon needed to discover the truth of the day he got lost. Of course as they both try to come to terms with the truth, a dance happens where they are pulled together and pushed apart.

Once I get the main plot points written down, then I start writing. I usually write the first chapter, but then after that I'll jump around. I'll move from the beginning, to the end, and then I'll write a little here and a little there throughout the book. I usually hit the main emotional scenes and focus on those first. I have those scattered throughout the book.

After I have about 1/2 of the book in pieces, I then start from the beginning of the book, starting over at chapter one and moving through the manuscript. By this point the whole story is already in my mind—like a movie—and it's just getting it on paper!

The Attic Baby is a huge fan of Mickey Mouse (if you couldn't guess from Wordless Wednesday photos like this one).  Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is one of the first shows she began watching on Disney Junior, which led to us purchasing stuffed Mickey & Minnie friends for her.  She won't go anywhere without taking her Mickey and sleeps with him every night.

Disney Junior shows, Mickey MouseWhen she saw The Quest for the Crystal Mickey arrive, her eyes lit up and she jumped up and down and asked to watch it right away.  We love the Indiana Jones-like Mickey and story lines!   I mean, how cute is Mickey with that hat?

Who wouldn't want to go on an adventure with "Kansas City Mickey"?

Michael Buble's To Be Loved #sponsored #ToBeLoved

5/23/13
music, Michael Buble
I participated in this campaign for One2One Network. I received a free copy of the album to facilitate my review. By posting, I am eligible for incentives. All opinions stated are my own.

I have some pretty eclectic taste; I listen to anything from classics to jammin' rock.  I remember being a fan of Harry Connick Jr. for a long time and then hearing about this guy Michael Buble and thinking "oh he's just a Harry Connick wannabe."  But I soon changed my mind after I kept listening to his music and seeing his performances.  He grew on me and now I like him equally with Harry, and for me, that's saying something.

To Be Loved, out now, finds the Grammy winner covering songs by Frank Sinatra, the Bee Gees, Jackson 5, Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, and more. In the mix of golden standards are four original songs co-written by Bublé, dipping into his personal life for inspiration.

These are good times for the singer, who is about to become a
music artists, classics
first-time dad (aww, can you imagine a mini Michael Buble?). He definitely sounds like a man in love with life!

"I wrote Close Your Eyes about my wife and about the power of all the women in my life—my sisters, my mom, my grandma and all women in general. Let’s face it, where would we be without them? I Got It Easy, another original, is basically a song where I count my blessings and is a reminder to me and everyone to appreciate all the good parts of life. I’m a very lucky guy and I never want to forget it."

One of my favorites is "It's a Beautiful Day."  It's a feel good tune and this video is just too funny:

My other favorite is classic that reminds me of my grandparents; "You Make Me Feel So Young":

music artists, classicsMichael Buble is just one of those charismatic artists that you can't help but like.  From his crooning voice, style, his classic songs and fresh lyrics, to his smile...there isn't a thing I don't like about him.

This album is great for listening to in the car or for a romantic evening at home.  (The Attic baby listened to this and danced around my dining room through the album and asked for more!)

"I want to take you on a wonderful journey about love—all different kinds of love," Michael says. "The album swings big time: it rocks, it’s soulful, it’s happy, sometimes a little sad. It’s romantic, it’s yummy, and it’s heartfelt."

This listener most definitely agrees.  There's a little something for everyone in this album.

They wanted something that was sturdy and would hold their three children. They purchased the Bounce House on Amazon at a discount. As soon as it arrived, the mail carrier stated how obnoxiously heavy the box was. It weighed in at about 60 pounds!  (Which really isn't that bad.) She was surprised at how sturdy it was. She was able to carry the Air Walker Bounce Castle around back to set it up with ease.

"BLAST ZONE" is one of the best brands on the market. First off, they are American made. The second thing is, you need to decide is what features you want like balls, slides, or hoops.  They love that it is extremely vibrant and bright. You can tell by the look on her kids' faces!

Sew Mama would definitely recommend this castle for all families.

DOC McStuffins Time For Your Checkup DVD #sponsored

5/17/13
Disclosure:  I was provided with a copy of the DVD for review purposes and the sponsor is providing the giveaway prize for one of my readers.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.  For more info see my Disclosure policy.

Disney Junior“Doc McStuffins: Time for Your Check Up!,” the second DVD compilation for Disney Junior’s hit animated TV series is now available on DVD May 7, 2013.  A must-add to the family viewing collection, the DVD comes packaged with 5 fun-filled episodes and a FREE growth chart.

2012's #1 cable TV series in Kids 2-5, "Doc McStuffins" tells the story of a nurturing six-year-old girl who heals stuffed animals and broken toys out of her backyard playhouse clinic.  Assisting Doc at the clinic are her trusty team of lovable stuffed animals including: Stuffy, an overly proud dragon; Lambie, her  cuddly best friend lamb; Hallie, a jolly and caring  hippo nurse; and Chilly, a snowman who spends a lot of time getting check-ups at the clinic.  Whether it's a case of loose stitching, low batteries or a blow-up toy who has sprung a leak, Doc and her pals are always there to lend a helping hand, while imparting to young viewers the importance of taking care of oneself and others.

If you have a little one at home, you probably are familiar with the line-up on Disney Jr.  DOC McStuffins is one of the Attic Baby's favorite shows!  It's creative, has great catchy tunes, sparks children's imagination, and teaches valuable lessons.  All of the quality programming this mom could ask for!

Disney JuniorThis second DVD has 5 great episodes that address eating right, safety, getting enough rest, healthy habits including teeth brushing, and friendship.   One of my favorites is "Gulpy, Gulpy Gators" because it reminds me of one of my favorite games as a kid "Hungry, Hungry Hippos."

A great aspect of this show is that it helps lessen the fear of having to go to the doctor.   I also love how the show encourages fun role play and discussion about important healthy habitsMy daughter loves singing "Time for your Checkup" and getting out her stethoscope to check if her stuffed animals are healthy.   She also likes to practice giving shots and taking their temperature.

This is definitely one DVD my daughter will be watching over and over again!

Family Fun at Hershey, PA #sponsored

5/16/13
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

This is the time of year that we start planning our family activities for late spring and summer.  Since we haven't been able to afford a lengthy vacation, we often plan day trips to places we think the kids will enjoy.

attractions in PA, Hershey

One of our favorite places to visit is Hershey, PA.  It's only a 2 hr drive from the Baltimore area and there is a variety of fun attractions to entertain not only the kids but adults too.  It is definitely worth the drive!

One of the most popular attractions of course is Hersheypark.  They have 65 rides and attractions from roller coasters to leisurely rides like the carousel.  I love how you can measure your child and easily figure out what rides they are tall enough for.  Back in the day, my son was just a little Reece's cup.  Oh, memories!

kids rides

There are also entertaining shows, an 11 acre walk-through ZooAmerica (we have yet to visit this but it's on our list!), and water attractions at The Boardwalk to cool off during hot days.  I know The Attic Baby would love the water features!

And what would a trip to Hershey be without something sweet?  It IS the sweetest place on earth after all.  I love visiting Chocolate World!  Not only can you take a fun free ride through the process of chocolate making, but you can sample some too (they give you chocolate after the ride).   The singing cows are lots of fun and you'll most likely find yourself singing that tune for the rest of the day.

family activities, vacations, day trips

The kids will love being a Hershey factory worker and personalizing candy bar labels.  My son did the factory worker thing when he was smaller.  He even wore the little paper hat.  It was too cute and I wish the photos I had back then were taken on a digital camera because they were a bit too dark. (Lesson learned.  I will do better with little miss when it's her turn) Plus there's a new one-of-a-kind 4D interactive experience called Hershey's Great Chocolate Factory Mystery.

There really are so many things to see and do that you may want to take several days to explore it all.  One of the places we'd love to go to is the Hersheypark Camping Resort.  Mind you, my idea of "camping" is definitely not the sleep out under the stars in a tent kind.  I like my own bathroom and a bed.  So their deluxe cabins definitely are more appealing to me!

Cabins feature heating, air conditioning, ceiling fan, dinner and table seating (woot no outdoor fights with the bugs!), bathroom with a shower, and a kitchenette that includes a fridge.   Now THAT's my style of camping right there!  They also offer discounted admission to the park and free shuttle service.

With so many fun things to see and do (and chocolate, did I mention the chocolate?) it's no wonder we are such Hershey, PA fans.  If you're looking for a fun day trip or family vacation that is close to home, check out Hershey.
