Comfort For a Teething Tot {Ends 10/13}

My daughter started cutting teeth later than some babies.  When she finally did, she didn't just get one at a time.  She got two or three at a time, which made her absolutely miserable.

She gets very irritable when a tooth is coming in.  The tell tale signs are drooling and putting her whole hand in her mouth.  We've found teeth marks on her hand several times.  She also will bite on her sleeves.  I have tried various teething rings with different textures and wash cloths or loveys, but she usually ends up biting her hand.

Nuby, teether, purice gel

I thought the  Nuby Coolbite Fun Pal Teether looked like it might interest her, since it has a cute little plush attached.  It also has purICE that is supposed to stay colder longer than water filled teethers.

teething, Nuby, baby products

This little guy is cute.  The Attic Baby hugged him and kissed him right away.  But she didn't put him in her mouth.  She carried him around like she does her other stuffies (stuffed animals) and talked to him.

It took her little bit for her to discover that she could chew on it.  But once she figured it out, she used "Gator" quite often.  Though she didn't really like it cold like I thought she would.

This teether has a hard main piece (seen in blue) with nubby arms and legs and a nubby bottom piece that contains the purICE.  She likes the nubby end piece the best on her swollen gums.  I like that this teether also functions as a fun little toy.  It can be wiped down with a damp soapy cloth(if you throw it in the sink, it takes longer for the plush to dry).  It is a great comfort item when she suffers from teething pain.

This is recommended for ages 3 months+.  You can find the Nuby Coolbite Fun Pal Teether at various retailers for $8.99.

What tips do you have to comfort a teething baby/toddler?

Laughter is {not} Good Medicine

Laughter is good medicine.

Normally I'd agree, but when you've had gall bladder surgery, not so much.

Hubby and  I were watching a comedy that had some good belly laughs.  Only I couldn't handle belly laughs.  They made my insides hurt.  And my incisions not so happy.  Even so much as a sneeze or a cough hurt.

It's getting much better, but man, those belly laughs can be rough.  Not good medicine.

But I am thankful for laughter.  It feels good to do some "normal" things.

The first week of recovery was the most difficult.  I'm able to get up and down stairs better now.  I still can't bend to pick up my baby girl, but am hopeful that after the two week mark I can start trying without fear of hurting myself.

I'm thankful for family and friends who have taken the time to care for The Attic Baby when I couldn't.  A family friend (who is like an "adopted" grandparent) watched my daughter the day of surgery.  It was so wonderful to know my baby girl was in good hands while we were at the hospital most of the day.  And my in-laws have been such a blessing; they drove down from PA to stay with us last week.  Baby girl loved daily walks, playing in the yard, and going to the park.  She enjoyed the undivided attention and so did her brother.  I don't know what we would have done without them while my hubby was working.

The surgeon said to continue a  low-fat diet for at least a couple more weeks.  That has been an adjustment.  Have you checked the fat content on labels for some things?  It might surprise you.  I've had to be very careful about things like mayo, olives (which I love!), salad dressing, bread, pasta, dairy, snacks and red meat.  Nothing too oily or fatty, which pretty much leaves out some of my favorite foods.   He said I need to slowly introduce those foods later to see how they digest.

I'll spare you the other fun details about digestion.  You really don't want to know.  I learned a lot more about gall bladders than I ever knew.

Thank you all who have left me such encouraging notes on Facebook, Twitter, and here on the blog.  I appreciate your prayers and well wishes so much!

BBC Drama: Emma {2009} 2 Disc Set

I am an all time period drama addict.  I can't get enough of those BBC dramas, especially those that are Jane Austen adaptations.  So when I had the opportunity to choose a movie from Mommy Bear Media,  I went straight to the British section to browse.

Have you heard about Mommy Bear Media?   It's a website that offers family-friendly movies for sale.  All their movies are selected according to this criteria:  they are clean (No R, NC-17, TV-MA, and selective PG-13 and TV-14 ratings) and good (high quality, top-rated, with a good message).  What I like about it is that it's a family-run business of moms who want to help other moms easily find great movies at good prices!  And they have a fun selection of old tv favorites I grew up with like Boy Meets World as well as newer releases.

I think that I have seen just about every version there is of Emma.  This updated version starring Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller is definitely my absolute favorite.  The scenery is gorgeous and the costumes are equally eye-catching.  But most importantly, the actors bring Jane Austen's characters to life

If you don't know the story of Emma, I'll give you a little taste in a nutshell:  she's an upper class young woman who meddles in other people's business, specifically in match-making.  This brings a whole lot of complicated but entertaining problems.

Romola Garai is amazing as Emma.  There are many who don't like the character of Emma; she's a snob, thinks she knows it all but really doesn't etc.  But somehow when you see this movie, she grows on you. Romola makes you feel for Emma; she means well but things don't always turn out the way she intended.  And she's very naive when it comes to knowing her own feelings and those of others.

Johnny Lee Miller makes a wonderful Mr. Knightley.   My only gripe is that he looks too close to Romola in age.  Emma is supposed to be 20 and Mr. Knightley is supposed to be something like 16 years older than her.

And Michael Gambon (you may recognize him from Harry Potter) plays Emma's party-pooper of a dad to perfection.  He is quite delightful, quirky, and fun to laugh at!

If you're a fan of period dramas, Emma is a must-see film.  I adore this version and will probably watch it over and over again!

What period dramas do you enjoy?   You may be able to find some of your faves on the site.

And don't forget to check out Mommy Bear Media on Facebook and Twitter.  They have some great giveaways!

Mountain Dew How I Love You {Giveaway}

Ok, so you all know that I like Mountain Dew.  I'm a self-proclaimed "Dew Addict."  But let me give you a little background information about how I became one.

When I was in my freshman year of college, I lived at home and drove myself back and forth to school.  It was about a half hour's drive and the parking near the campus was unbelievably annoying.  If you didn't find a spot near the school (they had STRICT parking rules and gave out their own school issued parking tickets!), you had to drive a few blocks down to a designated parking lot and wait for a shuttle to take you to campus.  I hated having to take the shuttle because it meant that you were at the mercy of their schedule and could end up late to class.

I always got myself up earlier so I could find that precious parking spot near school around 7 AM for an 8 AM class.  Since I'd end up with at about an hour wait until class started, I began hitting the vending machine in the lounge.  It had Mountain Dew.   I just loved the taste of citrus mixed with caffeine; it helped me perk up in the morning.  (I have never been a morning person)

This became a morning habit.  While the other ed majors came in with their steaming coffee, I couldn't stand the stuff (I love the smell of coffee but not the taste).  I always brought Mountain Dew to my first class.  And sometimes to those late evening classes too, since I would just wait around the library until my class started rather than driving back home.

The habit stuck and I still start off my morning with Mountain Dew.  I have fond memories of my students bringing me Mountain Dew as gifts for teacher appreciation (I've even been blamed for my former student's own Dew addiction!).

How about you?  What do you love about Mountain Dew?

Susan May Warren {Guest Post}

Hello, my name is Susan May Warren, author and small-town resident. My newest novel is You Don’t Know Me (which releases September 21!).

Annalise Decker is a model wife and mother—she participates in the PTA, her kids’ sports games, and her husband’s mayoral race. But what no one knows is that twenty years ago, Annalise was really Deidre O’Reilly, who was placed in the Witness Security Program because she testified against a dangerous criminal. Her secrets come to haunt her when an FBI agent returns to tell her the dangerous criminal is out on parole and out for revenge. (And you can hear a little more about the book by watching this video!)

This novel began on a flight to Portland. I sat next to a woman fidgeting in her seat, clearly distraught at some turmoil in her heart. After a few nudges from the Lord, I leaned over to ask her how she was, and why she was going to Portland.
“To say goodbye to my daughter, who is going into the witness security program.” Wearing a haunted expression, she looked at me. “She witnessed a murder and now the family of the convicted killer is threatening her. She isn’t safe.”
I stared at her. “For how long will she be in hiding?”
“Forever,” she said.
I swallowed. After a moment, “How old is your daughter?”

Now that the book release is just weeks away, I’ve been able to look back and see that we all keep secrets, and frankly, many of us are living dual identities: the one the world knows and the one created by the secret in our heart. God sees them both, and He still loves you. More, He longs to set you free. He can free you. Heal you. Fix your marriage, your family, your situation. I know because I’ve seen him do this in my life.

My prayer as you read You Don’t Know Me is that the truth sets you free to be the person God died for you to become.

Growing up in Minneapolis and attending the U of MN, Susan May Warren learned to love city life, although she’s a woodsy girl at heart. She loves God, her family, her country, and her church, and she feels privileged every day to be able to write stories that she hopes inspire and entertain. Her book, Happily Ever After, was a Christy Award Finalist in 2004. You can visit her website/blog, or contact her via Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you Susan for sharing your latest novel with my readers!

Disclosure:   This post is for the enjoyment of my readers.  My name is thrown in the hat for a drawing of an ARC copy of this book.  No compensation has been received and I would share anyway because I love supporting authors.

Snow White & The Huntsman Extended Edition

In this spectacular action-adventure, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) is Snow White, the only woman in the land fairer than the evil queen Ravenna (Oscar® winner Charlize Theron). Ravenna wants nothing more than to destroy her young rival, but she doesn’t know that Show White has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) the queen dispatched to kill her. Together with a handsome prince (Sam Claflin) enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power, they assemble an armed force to recapture the kingdom.

This breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders is, in the words of Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV, “A film that soars with creativity, stylistic genius and amazing battle scenes.”

Blu-rayTM and DVD Bonus Features:

·   A New Legend Is Born
·   Feature Commentary with director Rupert Sanders, visual effects supervisor
Cedric Nicolas-Troyan and co-editor Neil Smith

Bonus Features Exclusive to the Blu-rayTM

·      Reinventing the Fairy Tale
·      Citizens of the Kingdom
·      The Magic Of “Snow White and the Huntsman”
·      Around the Kingdom: 360° Set Tour

Movies have gotten really high tech lately.  This combo pack includes the theatrical version of the movie and the extended version not seen in theaters.  But it also has a digital copy compatible with your iPod, iPhone, and iPad and UltraViolet the new way to instantly stream and download to your tv, computer, tablet or smart phone.  In other words, it's got you covered on a wide array of devices.

This is a much darker version of the fairy tale that I remember as a child.  You won't find any princesses dancing and singing here.  But it does appeal to your older teen crowd with its action sequences and intense story line.

I think Charlize Theron was a perfect evil queen with just the right touch of beauty and allure to make you think she's nice but deep down, she's down right selfish.  It's not an easy character to pull off, but I think she was wonderfully creepy.  Kristen Stewart brought a different side to Snow White; she showed vulnerability and strength at the same time.   There is a bit of a unique love story twist in this movie that I didn't expect.  But it does leave you wondering if they are thinking about a follow-up sequel to find out if this fairy tale ends "happily ever after."

I'd recommend this movie for your older teens.  It has fighting sequences similar to Lord of the Rings type action.  It also has a scene where the queen is taking a milk bath and comes up out of the tub covering herself, but it is suggestive.    I enjoyed both the extended version and the theatrical version, but you may want to watch both of them to compare the differences.   It has some great lessons about facing your fears, valuing character over mere outer beauty, and standing up to wrong no matter how difficult.

Snow White & The Huntsman released on September 11th.

Disclosure:  I received a copy of the movie for review purposes.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.  For more info. see my disclosure policy.

My ER Visit

This has been a whirlwind of a weekend for me.  Sat. morning about midnight I woke up with extreme  pain in my chest that radiated down through my rib cage.  I wasn't sure what was wrong and was very disoriented.   I tried standing up, bending over, lying back down, but nothing eased it.  It just came out of the blue and I had no idea what it was.

My hubby was sleeping and I felt horrible about having to wake him up.  But the pain wasn't going away.  I went downstairs about 12:30 AM to wake him up and tell him I thought I needed to go to the ER.  It was a mad rush of waking up two sleeping kids, putting some things in the diaper bag, and rushing to the hospital.  Needless to say, we were both tired and scared.

They put me ahead in the screening process in case I was having a heart attack.  I was hooked up to an EKG, blood was drawn, and then I was put back out in the waiting room to wait.  It was the most painful experience I've felt in my life (even more than having two babies).   I couldn't get comfortable in the waiting room chair no matter what position I was in; it was excruciating.   And the pain was only getting worse.

They finally wheeled me back to an ER room alone.  The wait to get an IV with some pain meds took forever....and my family couldn't come back to see me.  The nurse had said probably 20 minutes or so before they could come see me.  It was more like 2 hours before I was able to get some pain relief and have my family come sit with me.  I was glad I had my cell phone so I could text my hubby, see how the kids were doing, and let him know what was happening.

They took me for a chest XRay and then an ultrasound.  It turns out that my heart was fine.  All the chest pain I was having was caused by my gall bladder.  The ultrasound showed a stone and my blood levels showed that my liver enzymes were slightly elevated.  But there wasn't any infection or blockage that they could see.

(I took these photos on my cell phone to distract myself while I was alone waiting for my family to be allowed in the room.  I was under a good pain killer at that point so some of the photos I took were pretty amusing.  I'll spare you my drug-induced silly pictures.)

After about 5 hours at the ER, I was able to go home.  I was told to call a surgeon today and that I would most likely need to have my gall bladder taken out.

The surgeon agreed and said I should have it out sooner rather than later.  So I am madly trying to find a babysitter for my daughter, making arrangements for my son, and trying to wrap my mind around having surgery.  This will be my second outpatient surgery and I am really dreading it.  I already know how I react to anesthesia and I am not looking forward to going under the knife.

I will probably be MIA for this week.  I am sorry that I will be behind on some blog posts, emails and drawing winners.  But I will get to them all as soon as possible.

Please say a prayer/send some healing positive thoughts for me while I go through this.  I'd really appreciate that and it will help ease my nerves.  Thanks so much friends!

Nuby's Fish Swoosh is a Slam Dunk

Bath time can be tricky with toddlers.  They either want to get in the bathtub or they don't.   (And when they don't, bribery can sometimes get you everywhere, know what I'm sayin?)

One of the ways I lure little miss into the tub is with fun bath toys.  She likes squirters and the usual rubber ducky.  But the Nuby Fish Swoosh Bath time Play Set has truly been one of her favorites (mom's too because I love me some basketball).

This set one-ups your average squirters by making some slam-dunking fun.  It has a basketball hoop that easily attaches to your bathtub with suction cups.  All you have to do is wet the suction cups and stick.  Mine have stayed stuck since we started playing with them a few weeks ago.  The backboard attaches inside a slot by snapping into place.  (You may need to ask your hubby to help you get that snap in there; I wasn't able to give it the arm force it needed. )

Once your hoop is up, give your little one the fish squirters and watch the fun happen.  It's as simple as that.   Mom and Dad can join in too!

Nuby, bath toys

What I like about this set is that the backboard was able to stand up to my hubby and my
son's slam dunks and didn't come unstuck.  That really impressed me because those guys know how to throw some tough shots.  I also like that there is a string closure at the bottom of the net that allows you to store the 3 squirters after your toddler is finished playing.

Fish Swoop will keep your little one happy and have them work on their coordination skills at the same time.  Definitely a slam dunk in my book!

This is recommended for ages 18 months+ and can be found at BuyBabyDirect.com for $12.99.
