Nuby Snack Keeper

8/30/12
One of the frustrating tasks of a mom's day is cleaning up messes.  Toddlers are well known for their whirlwind play; leaving a path of toys, food, and clothes in their wake.  It can be time consuming to follow your toddler around and pick up the messes they leave behind.

Nuby offers moms a solution to a little less clean up.  It's called the Snack Keeper:  a cup with a unique slotted lid that keeps snacks inside the cup instead of on your floor.

The Attic Baby has been testing this out for the past couple of weeks.  (And let me tell you, she is one tough cookie when it comes to clean up patrol.)

I was a bit skeptical after our first test drive of this cup.  The first snack we tried, little O's cereal, didn't turn out so well.  The O's were small enough that they could escape the lid when The Attic Baby shook, banged, and threw the cup.   I had a lot of O clean up on aisle one.

Nuby products

But we gave it another go.  I tried larger snacks like animal crackers, goldfish crackers, and cheese crackers this time.  Those items stayed in really well.  The only mess that was made was from her throwing the crackers she took out on the floor; something she enjoys doing quite often.    (You can see the goldfish crackers in the photo above with the cup turned upside down over the couch)

It took her a bit to get the hang of pulling out snacks out of the lid.  She was frustrated the first few times, but once I showed her how, she caught on quickly.

We have tried this snack keeper at home and on-the-go.   It is good for little hands to reach in, pull out the snack, and not have the extras fall onto the floor, table, or in the car.  It is also a good size to throw in your diaper bag for shopping trips.  And I love that it is dish washer safe!

I think I may try out one of the other newer styles next time and see if it holds smaller snacks like O's a little better.

You can find the Nuby Snack Keeper at BuyBabyDirect.com for $3.49 recommended for ages 12 months+

Mother of Pearl Litfuse Book Tour

8/25/12
About the Book:

Like oysters, women often encounter unexpected grit during their everyday lives. In response, God’s love and grace covers this grit and transforms the pain into a precious pearl that leaves a layered, luminous lining within a shell: Mother of Pearl. This brilliant luster is strong, lasting, and purposeful—just like the love, lessons, and legacies left by the special women in our lives.

Mother of Pearl celebrates the collective iridescence of motherhood. Margaret McSweeney presents a collection of heartfelt vignettes from authors who communicate the importance of the unique relationships between mothers and their children, between granddaughters and grandmothers and between children and the mother-figures in their lives.

These stories tell of the power of faith, prayer, and values, exploring coming of age, the joy of becoming a mother, the importance of motherhood, the ways to heal from a bad relationship with a mother and weathering the death of a special loved one. Poignant and thought-provoking, the stories serve to inspire, encourage, instill hope, and strengthen faith.

The proceeds from the sale of Mother of Pearl will be donated to organizations helping struggling women and children. The charities include Wings (Women in Need Growing Stronger) to help fund the Safe House in the Chicago suburbs and to Hands of Hope to help build wells for schoolchildren in Zambia.

Author Bio:

Margaret McSweeney is a well-published author often writing online articles for Make It Better (the former North Shore Magazine) and freelance articles for the Daily Herald, the largest suburban Chicago newspaper. In addition, she has authored and compiled several books including A Mother’s Heart Knows; Go Back and Be Happy; Pearl Girls: Encountering Grit, Experiencing Grace, Mother of Pearl andAftermath.

With a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina in international business, Margaret became a vice-president in the corporate finance division of a New York City bank and worked there 1986–93.

As founder of Pearl Girls, Margaret collaborates with other writers on projects to help fund a safe house for WINGS, an organization that helps women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, and to build wells for schoolchildren in Uganda through Hands of Hope. For the past 10 years she has served on the board of directors and leadership advisory board for WINGS. Margaret lives with her husband and 2 daughters in the Chicago suburbs.

My Review/Thoughts:

I have been a fan of The Pearl Girls for several years and was very excited to read these stories from some of my favorite authors including Tricia Goyer, and Robin Jones Gunn.  I also met some authors that I was not familiar with, but have enjoyed their heartwarming stories about motherhood.   Many of these stories pulled on my heartstrings and I was able to relate to them as a mom.  But even if you are not a mother, you may relate to these stories about family relationships and mother figures.

One of my favorites was from an inspirational person herself.  She has an incredible story of surviving a car accident with a traumatic brain stem injury, coming out of a one month coma and running a triathalon 14 years later.  Julie Papievis remembers dying and seeing her two deceased grandmothers who gave her this message:  "Your body will heal.  Go back and be happy." (pg. 142)  When I read this, it intrigued me and made me want to read more about her amazing story!

There are many more great "pearls" to read in this book, many that will leave you wanting to know more about that story or author.  And the best part is, when you purchase this book, you will be helping other women and children!

You can purchase this book for $12.99 (soft cover) or $7.99 e-book version at this link:  http://ow.ly/cTZAg

It's important to have some support when you are feeding your little one. A good support pillow can make it more comfortable for mom and for baby when nursing or bottle feeding.  Especially on those late night feedings!

Have you heard about My Feeding Friend?

This is a breast feeding/nursing support pillow that "grows" with your child.  You can use it not only for nursing (or bottle feeding), but also as a pregnancy pillow, support for tummy time, and toddler's first bedtime friend.  Isn't that a neat idea?  It follows you and your child through many stages!

This Grow-with-Me nursing pillow is multi-functional and cute!  I think it would make a great baby shower or new mom gift (although I haven't had first-hand experience using this product).  I personally think the puppy is cute, but you can also choose a tiger, turtle or a monkey.  More choices will be available in 2013.

You can purchase My Feeding Friend on their website.

Summary:

DEATH.  It’s the one experience everyone will share – except for Jak Hamelton, at least that’s what the plaque promised.

Three words whirl Jak to a particular garden paradise where a treacherous interaction between Man, Woman and a snake usher death and evil into the world. When a mysterious benefactor named El offers Jak the opportunity to bring the dead back to life and live forever, it sounds like an impossible dream. But after Jak’s grandfather unexpectedly begins aging backwards, it appears the dream just might be reality.

However, the weapon Jak’s been given to defeat death and evil doesn’t even work yet, and the serpent Beelz isn’t willing to give up the Earth without a fight. Besides that, there’s the poison…

Is it really true that the dead can live forever? What will it take to restore paradise?

Jak and the Scarlet Thread is the first of a series of young  adult/tween Biblical fantasy adventure books that will take readers through the entire Bible, starting with the tumultuous first nine chapters of Genesis. The author's goal is to help people discover God and his ultimate rescue plan as it unfolds through the ordinary people and extraordinary events of Scripture.

About the Author:

Nathan lives in Eau Claire, WI with his wife, four kids, and a menagerie of animals. In addition to writing, he produces a nightly kids radio show called Nite Lite on WHEM 91.3 FM that airs Sunday-Thursdays at 7:30 during the school year. Before journeying into writing, speaking and radio, Nathan spent ten years as a youth and children’s pastor in Wisconsin and Minnesota. You can find more information about Nathan and the projects he is working on at his website, www.nathanjanderson.net

Review/Thoughts:

The book is a really good way of interpreting and retelling the beginning of the Bible in Genesis.    The author's style of writing draws readers in and my son could not put it down once he started reading.   There is a lot of suspense and engaging characters;  my son's three favorite characters were Gramps, Man, and Mr. Nettor.  Gramps reminded my son of his own granddad who was loving and compassionate.  Gramps looked out for Jak and Tess and never gave up.  Man was childish and innocent and it was humorous the way he interacted with the other characters.  And Mr. Nettor was a cowardly old man who did not believe anything unless he saw it for himself.

Overall, it has a great message, although my son thought it was a little bit preachy.   He is looking forward to reading the second book and finding out what happens next (without giving any spoilers away, this book had in my son's words, a bit of a "Matrix" ending).

Giveaway:

One reader will sign a signed copy of Jak and the Scarlet Thread!

Just use the Rafflecopter form below.  You must be a US resident 18 or older to enter.  If you do not do the mandatory entries, your entries will not count.

Giveaway Ends 9/3/12 at 12:01 AM EST One entry per household and IP address.  Winner will be drawn using random.org and will have **48 hrs** to respond to email or another winner will be chosen. If mandatory entry is not completed, additional entries will not count.  No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited by law. Tales of a Nuby Sippy Cup

8/17/12
Once upon a time, there was this adorable baby girl who did not like sippy cups.  For the longest time, she would not drink out of anything but a bottle.  Her mama tried desperately to get her to drink out of a sippy cup.  Each morning, she'd give the little princess her regular bottle.  And then at lunch or dinner, she'd hand her a cute little sippy cup.  And the little princess would proceed to cry, bang the cup around, and throw it on the floor.  This repeated and repeated for several days until her daddy started giving her milk from a straw.

The little princess learned how to suck out of a straw soon enough.  And she was pleased.  She had no need for sippy cups.  But as she grew, her mama was tired of milk spilling out of cups with straws.  So the woman searched high and low for a sippy cup that would make the little princess happy.

Mama went through a lot of different kinds of sippy cups...and then the kind fairy Nuby sent along...

The Nuby No Spill Insulated Soft Sipper

This sippy cup had very special features.  It had a soft spout that was gentle to the little princess' gums and teeth.   The dual-flo valve not only protected her from leaks or spills, but also allowed for choice in fast or slow flow whenever she sipped.  The little princess was able to use the cap to open and tuck back or "snap" into its lid when she wanted a drink.  When she was finished, her mama would flip the cap and keep the spout nice and clean from those pesky germ bugs.   And best of all, the insulation helped keep her drinks cooler for longer periods and didn't leave moisture behind on mama's furniture.

The little princess was very happy with this sippy indeed!

And so was her mama.  And they all lived Happily Ever After.

Well, almost.  That is, until her mama realized these sippies were hand-wash only.

Alas, moms have to do dishes even in fairy-tales.

You can find the Nuby No Spill Insulated Soft Sipper from Nuby at BuyBabydirect.com and make your prince/princess happy too.

Jennifer Garner Q&A The Odd Life of Timothy Green #TimothyGreen

8/15/12

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending a live online Q&A session with actress Jennifer Garner about The Odd Life of Timothy Green.  Bloggers had the opportunity to ask her questions (we were able to type them and talk to each other in a chat room) and Jennifer responded via webcam. I was very excited to hear what Jennifer had to say about this movie!  I was unable to attend a screening, but am hoping to see it now that it has hit theaters today.

My first impression of Jennifer was that she seems very down to earth and easy going.  I have to admit that I was a bit "star struck".  This was my first time attending something like this and it was a bit wild to have one of my favorite actresses there by web cam.

She mentioned that it was a bit unfair that we could see her, but she couldn't see us.  She even took the opportunity to congratulate mom bloggers for being a powerful influence.

There were a lot of questions submitted, so I was pleasantly surprised that one of mine was answered!

Here are some of the highlights that stuck in my mind: (I'm paraphrasing a bit since I was distracted by a toddler and some technical difficulties)

What do you want the audience to take home after seeing this film?

Well, of course I want them to be entertained and have a good time.  I would love if the audience would take away that we should live in the moment more and judge ourselves less.

(My Question)  What advice would you give to new moms?
Just take it easy on yourself.  It's all going to come out okay!  Someone once told me that everything is a phase.  Just get through it and don't try to fix everything.

What has been your favorite role so far?

13 Going on 30

Who is one of your favorite children's authors?

Marla Frazee

If you could meet anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

I'll have to pick someone who is dead.  Benjamin Franklin or Abraham Lincoln.  Or Thomas Jefferson.  I'd like to ask what it was like being there while he was writing the Declaration of Independence.

Thanks Jennifer for taking the time to speak with bloggers like myself about your latest movie!

The Odd Life of Timothy Green hits theaters today August 15th.
