Love's Everlasting Courage Comes to DVD May 8th (Giveaway)

Bring Love Home this Mother’s Day

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Hallmark Channel’s captivating saga returns with another touching film based on the best-selling Love Comes Softly series by Janette Oke.  Centering on family values in the 19th century, the heartwarming story, LOVE’S EVERLASTING COURAGE, enlightens on DVD May 8 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Clark Davis (Wes Brown, “True Blood”) struggles to maintain his land and support his family during a long drought.  With a bank loan to repay, his wife, Ellen (Julie Mond, “General Hospital”) takes a job in town as a seamstress, but soon becomes ill with scarlet fever.  Devastated to lose his beloved wife, Clark and his young daughter turn to his parents for support.  Clark must find a way to save his farm and survive Ellen's death without losing the person he loves most: his daughter.

My Thoughts:

The latest movie in the Love Comes Softly series is a bit of a twist in plot line.  In previous movies, it was often the husbands that passed away, leaving the women to raise the children and take care of the homestead.   The wife/mom passes away in this movie, so if you're looking for a film that doesn't make your mom cry, you might want to save watching this for the day after Mother's Day.

Even though I knew the plot ahead of time from reading the books and seeing the previous films, it still made me feel empathy for the characters. (The story of Clark and Ellen is a prequel to the first movie, Love Comes Softly, so if you like sequencing, you might want to start with Love Begins and work your way forward)  The acting was very compelling and it showed how family leans on each other's strength in the midst of tragedy.   Just because it's a great gift for mom doesn't mean that it's not a film for the whole family.  Even my husband enjoys watching this with me.  It has great family values and messages.

God Gave Us Love by Lisa Tawn Bergren

4/26/12

About the Book:

"Any time we show love, Little Cub, we’re sharing a bit of his love."

In a sturdy format, ideal for the littlest hands at storytime, bedtime, or anytime, God Gave Us You assures each child that he or she truly is a treasured gift from the Lord.

My Review:

I have read one other book in the series, God Gave Us You, and absolutely loved it!  This book did not disappoint in its wonderful message about different kinds of love.  I liked that it had a grandparent spending time with his grand-cub; grandparents play such an important role in the lives of grandchildren.  Little Cub asks Grandpa Polar Bear important questions about love that I'm sure I will be asked one day by my little girl.  Grandpa Polar Bear explains different kinds of love: between moms and dads, siblings, others outside our family, and God's great love for us.

The author's explanations are simple for little ones to understand.  It can lead to great discussion about how we should love others and treat them the way we want to be treated.  It can also lead to further discussions about how God loves us and about what Jesus did for us.  The book is a little bit wordy but thorough in covering the concept.

This is recommended for ages 3-5.  I tried to read some of it to my 16 month old, but her attention span is pretty short so she mostly enjoyed the beautiful illustrations.  I love the color choices and the cute little polar bears wearing diapers!  My daughter enjoyed pointing at them as I named the animals and objects.  I love the fact this is available in a board book so that little toddler hands can enjoy it without it getting torn.  I'm sure that this book will be dearly loved for years to come!

How Not To Lose Your Kids' Stuff With Lovable Labels

4/24/12
One of the fun things about sending your child off into the world is the old age problem of LOST items.  Whether it's sending your child off to school, daycare, or summer camp, there is always the knowledge that something is bound to get lost or mixed up with some other child's stuff.

I've thought of different ways to try to solve this problem myself:

Super Glue in various ways  (you know you've thought of this one!)
Sewing items into his underwear  (thought of it, but it sounded a little too dangerous)

Labeling is a better alternative.  I've used permanent marker on a lot of things, but sometimes it just doesn't show well enough.  Or it bleeds through the wash.

Another mom had this issue and decided to come up with a label that would work on clothing, shoes, lunches, backpacks, and even items that go in the dishwasher like sippy cups.  And a company called Lovable Labels was born.

According to their website, these labels are durable, waterproof, dishwasher and microwave safe, washer and dryer safe, sun safe, bleach safe, sunscreen safe, and temperature safe.

Do you think they were Attic Tween safe?

I was asked to try out the Camp Pack and chose the Sporty theme.  Since it's too early for summer camp, we tried these out on my son's school items.

The Camp Pack has:

15 Sticker Labels
40 Slimline Labels
12 Shoe Labels
72 Press n' Stick Clothing DOTS™
2 Mini-Metal Tags (two 4” silver ball chains incld)
12 Square Labels

There are so many uses for these labels.  You can label storage containers, books, clothing items, lunch bags, and more.  I put a Slimline label (the one with the hockey stick) on his school binder and on his instrument case.

This binder gets shoved into his backpack on a daily basis.  We've had this label on for over a month now, and it's still stuck (I covered up his name for privacy).  It's not worn, peeling, or illegible.  Still in the same shape it was when we stuck it on.  Pretty impressive!

The label has also been on his instrument case for the same amount of time.  This has gone back and forth to school and in-between two homes.  Still stuck.  And still in great shape.

Overall, I am very pleased with the quality of these labels and am going to continue using them.

Disney's CHIMPANZEE Swings Into Theaters Today

4/20/12

Are you a fan of nature films?  This one from Disneynature looks like a great one to take the family out to see!  It's in theaters starting today.  And did you know that if you take your family to see this during its opening week (April 20-26, 2012) Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute to protect chimpanzees?   You can help make a difference just by supporting this film!

Check out the information below and get a sneak peek into the movie.  You can also find CHIMPANZEE on Facebook: Facebook.com/Disneynature

Disneynature takes moviegoers deep into the forests of Africa with “Chimpanzee,” a new True Life Adventure introducing an adorable young chimpanzee named Oscar and his entertaining approach to life in a remarkable story of family bonds and individual triumph. Directed by Alastair Fothergill (“African Cats” and “Earth”) and Mark Linfield (“Earth”), and narrated by Tim Allen (“Toy Story 3,” ABC’s “Last Man Standing”), “Chimpanzee” is the fourth release for Disneynature—the first three releases under the label (“Earth,” “Oceans” and “African Cats”) are among the top four highest grossing feature-length nature films of all time.

“Chimpanzee” showcases Oscar’s playful curiosity, his zest for discovery and the intelligence and ingenuity of some of the most extraordinary personalities in the animal kingdom. Working together, Oscar’s chimpanzee family—including his mom, Isha, and the group’s savvy leader, Freddy—navigates the complex territory of the forest.

The world is a playground for little Oscar and his fellow young chimpanzees, who’d rather make mayhem than join their parents for an afternoon nap. But when Oscar’s family is confronted by a rival band of chimpanzees, he is left to fend for himself until a surprising ally steps in and changes his life forever.

Rated G by the MPAA, “Chimpanzee” swings into theaters on April 20, 2012, just in time for Earth Day.

For every moviegoer who sees “Chimpanzee” during the film’s opening week (April 20-26, 2012), Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect chimpanzees today and tomorrow. Founded in 1977, the Jane Goodall Institute continues Dr. Goodall’s pioneering research on chimpanzee behavior started more than 50 years ago—research that transformed scientific perceptions of the relationship between humans and animals. Today, the Institute is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. It also is widely recognized for establishing innovative community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian program for youth of all ages, which has groups in more than 120 countries. We Got Our Bake On This Easter

4/12/12

This Easter weekend was a pretty special one for us. We had both of our kiddos and the Attic Baby had her very first egg hunt!

To add to the sugar high, we decided to get our bake on and make some yummy cupcakes with our extra kit that I'd been saving just for this occasion.  You can read about my review of their cheeseburger cupcake kit here.

If you're not familiar with Cupcake Cuties,  they sell fun decorative kits to make your cupcakes adorable!  All you have to do is buy your favorite cupcakes, bake 'em, ice 'em, and then use the kit to decorate.  Easy as 1, 2, 3!

This Easter Basket Kit is just too cute NOT to make at Easter!  It contains:

  • (24) Easter Basket Cupcake Sleeves/Wrappers
  • Marbled Egg Confetti Shaker
  • Colored Pipe Cleaners (for handles)
  • Easy to follow How-To decorating instructions and illustrations

After baking yellow cupcakes, we gathered our icing and kit ingredients and got to work.

We put all of the sleeves around the cupcakes first.  This makes it a little easier rather than icing them and then trying to wrap the sleeves around the base.  My son wants to get into culinary arts some day, so he took over the icing.  (the one in the photo doesn't have a sleeve yet)

After that, we added the decorative egg shaped sprinkles and put the pipe cleaners on.  I cut the pipe cleaners in half so they would fit the cupcakes since some were a little smaller than others.

Don't they look cute?  They turned out delish too!   I set them all on my favorite sunflower plate and then took The Attic Baby's lamb and some Easter eggs to add a little flair in presentation.

We were able to get all our cupcakes baked and decorated before The Attic baby woke up from her nap.  It was a fun family activity that didn't take up too much time.  Definitely a plus when you have little ones at home!

These cuties are great for parties, special occasions, or just because.   If you're looking to add a little pizazz to your cupcakes, you should check out the other kits they have available.

You can purchase kits directly from the Cupcake Cuties website.  Find their latest designs and news on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.

Thanks Cupcake Cuties for helping us get our bake on!

Disclosure:  I received the above kit for the purpose of review.  No other compensation was received and all opinions are my own.

Moms, Take The Time To Pamper Yourself: Perfectly Posh Giveaway

4/11/12

As a busy mom with a tween and a toddler at home, it's difficult for me to take time for myself.  Especially when it comes to taking care of my skin.  There just aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done.  Daily chores, playtime with the Attic Baby, eBay, blogging, school drop-off and pick-up....these all take up most of my time.  It's difficult to find time to brush my teeth or shower on any given day, so pampering is usually a special occasion.

If given the opportunity to pamper myself, I definitely enjoy it.  Especially if it's something to pamper my tootsies.  I have ten years of "teacher feet."   And they aren't pretty right now; winter dry skin has taken its toll.  Going out to get a pedicure just doesn't fit into my schedule (or my budget).

Perfectly Posh is a relatively new company (launched in 2011) with a "passion for pure and pampering products."     These are paraben and parafin-free, soy-free, SLS-free spa grade products.  They use essential oil and fine pthalate-free fragrances and natural ingredients.  And they are made here in the USA.

The company sent me some great products from their Play Footsie line for this mama's tired and dry tootsies.  (You may remember that I injured my foot a few months ago so this came at a great time!)

I started off with a soak with these.  The Fabulous Fizzies contain canola oil for moisture and a pop of peppermint and thyme to soothe and relax tired feet.  These are wonderful!   I felt so relaxed that I could have nodded off while soaking.  The peppermint and thyme scent is like your own little spa aromatherapy.  (I love the smell of peppermint!)

Next, I used the Rubby Scrubby exfoliator.   It doesn't feel grainy like other scrubs I've used.  It feels smooth with a mild shea butter soap.  Since my feet were incredibly dry (I haven't been able to do lots of scrubbing on my feet because of my injury), this helped get a lot of the dead skin off after my soak.  It was a little hard to rub on my foot because I still have pain and soreness from my torn ligament.  So I used my fingers to rub it on.  Again, the smell of peppermint and thyme was wonderful!

Last, I used the Soothing Stick.   It is a smooth moisturizer preserved with vitamin E containing shea butter, bees wax, sunflower, and corn starch.    It didn't feel greasy but light and smelled just as yummy as the others.  It was the whipped cream to this dessert of foot pampering!

Now these are some happy mama feet!  (though I didn't have time for polish)

The company also sent me some products from their Lipshot and Oh, Peaches! lines to help with my dry lips.  I am an open-mouth breather when I sleep.  So often times my lips get incredibly dry from catching flies all night long.

The Oh, Peaches! sugar lip scrub has all natural cane sugar and butters that help slough off dry skin.  I rubbed it into my lips and after a few minutes, some of the dry skin came right off and left a smooth texture behind.  It smells and tastes like peaches.

After exfoliating, I felt like I needed some extra moisture, so I added the Lipshot balm.  It contains shea butter and almond oil.  It left my lips feeling soft with a light texture.  I have used this right after I wake up in the morning; it gives a nice moisturized shine to my pucker with a sweet peachy scent.

I enjoyed taking some time out for me and my dry skin.  I'm definitely going to take the time to pamper myself more often!   I think next time I'll recruit my hubby for a massage after my pedi.

Want to pamper yourself too?

Tricia Goyer Interview and Facebook Party

4/10/12

Are you interested in the events surrounding the sinking of The Titanic?  Do you enjoy a well-told story with engaging characters?  I sure do!  And author Tricia Goyer is one of my favorite story tellers.  Read below to find out more about her latest book and the inspiration behind it.  Then join in on the fun at the Titanic Facebook Party party tonight!

When the Titanic left Southampton on April 10, 1912, the world was fascinated with its size, the luxury, the symbol of prominence for the wealthy onboard, and the promise for the emigrants hoping for a better future in America.

For the past 100 years since its sinking on April 15, 1912, the world has been consumed with how a ship deemed unsinkable sank, the artifacts at the bottom of the ocean, the stories of the people on board, and the history the ship held. In commemoration of this landmark anniversary, award-winning author Tricia Goyer has released By the Light of the Silvery Moon (Barbour Publishing/March 2012/ISBN 978-1-61626-551-9).

When the Titanic movie first came out in 1997, Goyer, like most of America, became fascinated with the tragedy.

“The movie captured my attention. Yes, there was a love story, but the ship of dreams fascinated me even more. I checked out many books at the library and bought others on the Titanic. I didn't think of writing a novel about it. Still, I carried a love inside for that amazing ship and its passengers,” says Goyer.

Around that same time, Goyer had been working on the idea for a novel centering on a contemporary retelling of the prodigal son. While the idea did not go farther than the prologue at the time, she kept the idea in the back of her mind. Fifteen years later, when her publisher approached her about the possibility of writing a book to mark the anniversary of the Titanic, Goyer was excited about the opportunity and realized that it was time to merge the two ideas together in a unique, faith-filled tale of love and reconciliation.

Goyer’s extensive research from books, documentaries and visiting a museum dedicated to the ship all contribute to making By the Light of the Silvery Moon amazingly historically accurate. With her beautiful gift of storytelling, readers are sure to feel that they have been transported back 100 years to the fateful night that changed the lives of all onboard the “Ship of Dreams.”

An interview with the author:

Q: By the Light of the Silvery Moon is a fictional story taking place on the decks of the Titanic. How do you think this setting enhanced the story?

Every author tries to weave conflict into a story—it's that conflict and tension that keep readers turning pages. Because the sinking of theTitanic is so well known, the tension is built in. As my character Amelia is being wooed by two men, the reader knows what's coming—an iceberg is ahead!

Q: This novel has appropriate timing, releasing on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. How heavily did you research the Titanic before writing By the Light of the Silvery Moon?

You should see my stack of books on the Titanic; it's as tall as me! I've read through many books—not just recently but over the last fifteen years. I've watched many documentaries, too. I've been fascinated by the Titanic for a while, and I was excited about the opportunity to write this novel.

My whole family also visited the Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, Missouri. It was amazing! They had a complete model of the Titanic, and numerous artifacts like life vests, watches, and purses. They had models of the staircase, the staterooms, and the decks. Each of us received boarding passes of actual passengers and we read about their lives as we went along. My passenger—a young mother—didn't survive. Probably the most emotionally powerful element was a water tank that held water at the temperature of the frigid ocean so many people plunged into. I put my hand into it and after ten seconds it was aching. The museum brought to life what I'd been reading about.

Q: Did you take steps to ensure the story remained historically accurate or did you let your imagination run wild?

I worked hard to ensure the story remained historically accurate. All the time is true—when the ship launched, when they reached France and Ireland, when they set out in the open ocean, when the first ice was spotted, when the lifeboats were launched, etc. I researched the layout and decorations of the ship. I even made sure things like what they ate and the musical entertainment were correct. I included real passengers within my story, too.

My creativity came in with my primary characters. There was no Amelia Gladstone or Damian and Quentin Walpole on the Titanic. They are purely figments of my imagination.

Q: By the Light of the Silvery Moon parallels the story of the prodigal son from the Bible. How is this story different than the Biblical version?

This story is different because it's set on the Titanic for starters! I did try to keep the heart of the prodigal son story—the emotions of the brothers and the love of the father especially. While the Bible doesn't describe if the brothers ever reconciled, there is some level of reconciliation in my novel—but I don't want to give too much away!

Q: How is By the Light of the Silvery Moon different from other novels you’ve written?

This is the first novel I've written about an event so widely known. There are THOUSANDS of books written on the Titanic. I am certain that experts can find little things I may not have researched enough. . .like the correct size of the linen napkins or things like that. As I wrote, there were those doubts and worries if Titanic die‐hard fans would enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed it, but in the end I had peace. I love the story, and I loved bringing the prodigal son story to life. Yes, there is room for one more story about the Titanic—especially when it can highlight the love of God.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from By the Light of the Silvery Moon?

I hope they'll understand more about the Titanic. As with all my novels I believe that bringing history to life honors those from the past.

I also hope their understanding of God's love and forgiveness and open arms will grow, too. As someone who didn't grow up having a relationship with my father, the love of my heavenly father can be hard for me to grasp. For readers who have the same experience, I hope they'll take away a deeper understanding of God's undying love.

Titanic Facebook Party:

Tonight at 8 PM EST (5 PM PST) Tricia will be hosting an author chat and trivia contest wrapping up her Book Tour.  She'll also be giving away books, gift certificates, and a book club prize pack!  Click the link below to find out more.  Hope to see you there!
