Synopsis:

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Almost FamousJerry Maguire) and starring Matt Damon (ContagionTrue Grit), Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Thomas Haden Church (Easy ASideways), WE BOUGHT A ZOO is “a sweet-natured tale…that you’ll want to see with your kids” (Liz Braun, Jam! Movies).

Benjamin Mee (Damon) is a Los Angeles newspaper columnist and adventure writer who, as a single father, faces the challenges of raising his two young children.  Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house outside the city with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster (Johansson) and her dedicated team.  With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo.  Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he’s living it in his own backyard.

Featuring an incredible musical score composed by Jónsi of the band Sigur Rós, the WE BOUGHT A ZOO Blu-ray is loaded with over 2½ hours of special features including 20 deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel, four behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary with Director Cameron Crowe, star J.B. Smoove (The Sitter, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Editor Mark Livolsi, and more. The film also features an English Family Friendly Audio Track that earned the Dove Seal of Approval.  The Blu-ray and DVD will be available for an average retail price of $24.99 and $19.99 respectively.

My Review/Thoughts:

Watching this movie was definitely an emotional experience for me.  The story about a dad who loses his wife and has to take care of two hurting children while grieving himself, really struck a chord since it reminded me so much about my sister-in-law (you may remember that she lost her husband in a car accident two years ago).  If you've ever experienced loss, this movie will definitely touch your heart.  Be prepared to have tissues on hand!

I liked the fact that this was a true story about a family going from loss and despair to hope and perseverance.  Although this is a family film, I was surprised at the language in it, even for a PG movie.  There were some cuss words frequently used and a reference that you may find inappropriate to be coming out of a young child's mouth (although used humorously).  I would recommend this for ages 10+ for that reason, as you may find it difficult to explain the reference I am talking about to a younger child (I won't use the exact word, but it refers to a male body part).

There are some really great themes overall including: hard work, dealing with grief, romance (the teen romance was tastefully represented), and compassion for animals.   Though we were a bit caught off guard by the language, the good story line and themes overshadowed it.

Matt Damon was definitely perfect in his role as a dad and I hope to see him in more roles like this!

Love Is...Some Ground Up Hamburg

Ladies, I'm going to brag on my husband today. I believe he deserves it.

The other night, we had family taco night, which we hadn't done in a while. My hubby came home from a long day at work and went to directly making dinner while I watched our daughter play in the living room.

He cooked up the hamburger for our tacos into two separate dishes; one with the taco seasoning and one without just for me because he knows I don't like the spiciness of the seasoning. Then he diced up the tomatoes for me (even though he doesn't like them himself). And spread out all the fixings that my son and I like on the table.

We took turns eating so that one of us could feed our toddler and the other could enjoy dinner while it was still warm.

When dinner was finished, I mentioned I wanted to use the extra hamburger for my lunch the next day. He apologized that there wasn't a lot of meat left since he wasn't sure how much to leave out for me that wasn't seasoned. I was a little disappointed that there was just a little bit left, and I guess he could see that in my face (though I told him it was fine, I could make do with what we had).

He went out to the pharmacy to pick up some things that I needed and came home. Then I saw him in the kitchen again cooking and asked him what he was making, thinking that maybe he was making his lunch for work ahead of time.

He told me that he was cooking hamburger.

He had stopped by the grocery store on the way home and picked up some more so that I could have it for my lunch. And he took the time to cook it up for me and store it in the fridge to save me from having to do it.

When I put together my lunch the next day, I couldn't help but smile and be reminded of the sweet thing that he did for me. It was something simple, but that simple thing was done with so much love behind it.

I am one blessed woman to be married to a man who demonstrates love every day with simple actions.

Thank you honey for loving me like that.

Teaser Tuesdays: If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff

    3/27/12

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
    * Grab your current read
    * Open to a random page
    * Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
    * BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
    * Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

    My Teaser:

This week's teaser is from a favorite children's book.  I've been pretty busy lately and haven't had much time for independent reading.  My daughter enjoys pointing at the pictures and commenting (although I can't understand her babbles, I love hearing them!).

"She'll ask you for some bubbles.  When you give her the bubbles, she'll probably ask you for a toy.  You'll have to find your rubber duck."

pg. 6-7 If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff

What are you reading? If you have a teaser, you can head on over to Miz B's blog or share it here by leaving a comment.

Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Giveaway And Crafts

    3/26/12

CHIPMUNKS AND CHIPETTES REUNITE FOR THE GREATEST ADVENTURE EVER

Chipwrecked Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download Combo Pack Available March 27

Also Available in an “Island Adventure” Edition with Additional
Fun Features Including Sing-Alongs, Games and More!

Everyone’s favorite chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore, and their female companions, The Chipettes, have the time of their lives during a family vacation they’ll never forget in ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED, debuting on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on March 27 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.  The hilarious live-action comedy will also be available as an exciting “Island Adventure” edition on Blu-ray and 2-Disc DVD, filled with tons of fun for the whole family to enjoy just in time for Easter.

The Chipmunks, Chipettes and their caretaker Dave Sevelle (Jason Lee; “My Name is Earl”) embark on a trip of a lifetime aboard the Carnival Dream cruise ship.  Seeking fun and excitement, the Chipmunks turn the luxury cruise liner into their own personal playground.  But the ultimate vacation quickly becomes a disaster when the Chipmunks, Dave and Carnival cruise pelican mascot, who turns out to be the chipmunks’ old manager, Ian Hawke (David Cross; Megamind), accidentally fall overboard and find themselves ‘Chipwrecked’ on a remote island.  Stuck in an unfamiliar territory, the six furry castaways are separated from Dave and must figure out a way to survive on their own for the first time in their lives.

Written and produced by husband and wife duo Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. and Janice Karman, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED features a star-studded voice cast with Justin Long (Dodgeball) as Alvin, Mathew Gray Gubler (“Criminal Minds”) as Simon, Jesse McCartney (Horton Hears a Who!) as Theodore, Christina Applegate (“Up All Night) as Brittany, Anna Faris (What’s Your Number?) as Jeanette, and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) as Eleanor.

We are big fans of the Chipmunks!  I remember watching the cartoons when I was a kid.  I think it's neat that my kids get to enjoy them as well.  We haven't seen Chipwrecked yet, but are looking forward to it coming to DVD.

Here are some fun activity sheets and crafts to go along with the release of the DVD.  My favorite is the home made play dough!

    CRAFTS FOR MINI-‘MUNKS

In Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, the Chipmunks and the Chipettes find themselves on a family vacation with Dave aboard a cruise ship. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes quickly find themselves causing raucous to the other passengers, which Dave has to amend immediately by setting up a dinner with the Captain.  Before he leaves for his dinner, Dave receives a gift from Theodore, a macaroni necklace that he made for him.  With the release of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked on DVD and Blu-ray on March 27th, we will look at some other crafty ideas that parents can enjoy making with their mini ‘munks, such as origami, home-made play dough and soap bars.

    ORIGAMI

Origami, the art of making different designs through paper folding, is a simple and inexpensive way to spend time with your children, without the need of any gadgets. All you need is paper and you’re all set. You can make simple designs such as a plane or a dog face by simply making a few folds. Once you’ve mastered the more simple examples, you and your young one can move on to the more complex origami, like the crane.
                                                      PAPER PHOTO FRAME

Instead of buying mom or dad a cookie-cutter card from the store, why not make a personalized homemade card that includes photos of their favorite faces. This easy to make craft is perfect for any occasion such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays or even just to tell them you love them.

    HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH
Homemade play dough is easy to make and is relatively inexpensive – all you need for the most part are some salt, water, flour and food dye to jazz up the dough. Young children can do it by themselves though adult supervision is recommended. The dough-making process takes a mere 15-minutes and you get comparable results with those that are store-bought.

                                                                                SOAP BARS

Soap bars are the perfect craft to do with any child of any age. They make for a fun project and can be given as gifts to moms, grandma or teachers. They’re also fun to use in the bath!  Children can mold designs of their favorite character or animal and make colorful patterns.   Though it is a homemade craft, certain soap recipes call for the use of a stove and thereby adult supervision is required.

                                                                TIE-DYED SHIRTS
Boys and girls of any age would have fun making tie-dyed shirts.  It can easily be done at home with a few supplies or be part of an art project in school.  You can take any plain boring white shirt and add colorful designs to it by simply tying the shirt in various knots and dipping it into dye. Not only is it a fun craft but now you also have a brand new summer shirt to enjoy.

Rules of Etiquette When Driving Near Baltimore

    3/15/12
You are driving down the highway and see the Welcome to Maryland sign. You wonder, what should I expect when driving on Maryland roads?

Without further ado, here are the "Rules of Etiquette" when you are driving near Baltimore:

#1 Turn signals are so 1990's. Why use 'em?

#2 You should drive at least 20 miles over the speed limit at all times. If not, you're fair game.

#3 When making left hand turns, get into the middle of the intersection and angle towards opposing traffic. If the light turns red, floor it!

#4 Drive as close to the bumper in front of you as possible. Everyone needs a little nudge of motivation to get moving.

#5 Pay no attention to what you learned in Kindergarten about staying within the lines.

#6 If the person in front of you doesn't merge into heavy traffic, honk at them and make wild gestures. Then proceed to swerve around their vehicle.

#7 If it's raining, pray for snow.  People drive much better in the snow than they do in the rain.

#8 If you see a School Bus with their stop sign out, go around them. The kids are dropped off on the other side at the curb anyway.

    #9 One-way signs are merely a suggestion.

#10 When you hear sirens or see flashing lights, hit the gas and avoid the pokey.

Welcome to Maryland: Drive at your own risk.

(These rules of etiquette are not endorsed by the Attic Girl. )

Shabby Apple Baby Boutique Dress Review

    3/12/12
I've seen a lot of buzz on the web about Shabby Apple.  It's a fashion company "started by women and for women seeking to bring dresses back to what they used to be:  a one piece outfit.  No need to add anything-no tank tops, no cardigans, nothing (except accessories of course)".

They have beautiful boutique and vintage style dresses, skirts, and tops that are not only fashionable, but also modest.

What's also neat about this company is that a percentage of their proceeds go to charities that benefit women and children.

You may be familiar with Shabby Apple's women's dresses, but did you know that they also have a Shabby Baby line too?

    Shabby Baby Dresses

We have a wonderful selection of little girl dresses to choose from. Whether you’re looking for flower girl dresses, something playful, something casual, or even something for a special occasion, like an infant Christmas dress, we’re sure to have something that you will love. We’ve designed all of our toddler and infant girl dresses to compliment our other lines so whatever Shabby Apple outfit you’re wearing, you’re daughter is sure to look great along side you!

I love finding adorable clothing for my daughter.  Now that she is in the toddler stage, I look for items that are cute as well as comfortable and functional.

    Shabby Apple

The company sent me this Hibiscus dress in Size 12-18 months.  It has beautiful white flowers outlined with yellow and brown with shades of blue and green.  The coloring is perfect for spring or summer.

    Shabby Apple

    Shabby Apple

I love the cap sleeves, brown band highlighting the empire waist, and the length that falls right below the knee.

It's a light fabric as well, which is great for when the weather gets warm.   For cooler days, you can add a sweater or cardigan.

The dress is machine washable on the delicate cycle and must be line dried.  I like that it doesn't have to be hand washed; that's definitely a time saver.

    Shabby Apple

The site states "This dress fits very generously through the neck and shoulders. We do not recommend ordering a size up."  I found that to be true.  However, the brown band with the button in the back was a little tight.  (I'm not sure how long this dress will fit, and there aren't any larger sizes available in this style.)  The larger 18-24 months size might not be as tight, but I'm not sure if it would be too loose around the neck and shoulder area.

There is a sizing guide for their women's collection, but there isn't one for their baby collection.  I think a sizing guide would be helpful.   Especially since sizing for babies and toddlers varies among companies.

My only other criticism is that the dress does not come with a diaper cover.  I like having a diaper cover, not only for the look, but also to keep my curious tot from trying to take off her diaper.

Overall, I am very pleased with this dress!

    McDonald's Happy Meal Chefs Contest

    3/9/12
Do you enjoy cooking with your children?  McDonald's new "Happy Meals Chefs" Contest may be right up your alley!

Your child could win an apprenticeship with McDonald’s executive chef and help his team whip up new fun and goodness in the Happy Meal.

Ten finalists will win a trip to the London 2012 Olympic Games as part of the Global Champions of Play program where they will join kids from around the world celebrating balanced eating and fun play.

HMchefsLogo.jpgFrom now through April 18, parents or legal guardians with kids (ages 8-11) are eligible to enter on the Happy Meal Chefs contest website

Working as family teams, all you have to do is answer a brief questionnaire and submit a short online video that creatively showcases your mealtime.

The contest is part of their new Happy Meal campaign aiming to make nutrition fun for kids. In addition, the campaign includes new TV advertisements featuring menu items from recommended food groups found in the new Happy Meal, which includes apple slices and a kid-size fry. These are the first ads that support McDonald's nutrition commitment to promote a nutrition and/or lifestyle message in 100 percent of its national communications to kids.

The ads introduce new characters – each with a story that celebrates kids’ aspirations – who achieve their goals with the help of balanced eating and active play

Check out the first ad here.

The new Happy Meal campaign is McDonald’s latest effort to support their “Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices,” announced in July 2011.
