Back to School Seventh Generation Kit Review And Giveaway

8/10/10

It's hard to believe that Back-To-School time is just about here!  While you're busy getting your children ready with much-needed school supplies and outfits, have you thought about the things they will need to keep them healthy and germ free in the classroom?

Seventh Generation conducted a survey and found that 82 percent of parents with kids in grades K-5 worry about the germs in their children’s classrooms.

Seventh Generation is a company that has been using the natural disinfecting power of thyme without using harmful chemicals in your home for over 20 years.  According to their website, these products can supposedly kill over 99.99 percent of germs naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.

This school year, Seventh Generation is sharing tips from author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season.

Dr. Greene suggests these precautions:

Optimize the immune system

*Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt
*Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D
*Build a strong foundation: good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish

Be wise about reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful germs

*Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom
*Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs** naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
*Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
*Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze.

***Refer to disinfecting product labels for full details

Review

I know I worry about germs during cold and flu season especially.  So when I was given the opportunity to review the Seventh Generation Back-To-School Kit, I was excited to try out these products in my home.

I received the disinfecting wipes, disinfecting multi-surface spray cleaner, facial tissue and paper towels.  The disinfecting wipes  and multi-surface spray cleaner can be used on any hard non-porous surface, and both are very easy to clean with.   I used the wipes all around the bathroom area and the spray cleaner was great for the kitchen counters.  I also used the wipes on the pre-owned car seat and stroller that we just bought for our little Peanut due in Dec.  The only downside to the cleaners is that I am not a big fan of the lemon grass scent; but this is my personal preference.

The tissues were not as soft as the tissues I've used in the past, but they held up well to lots of nose blowing (I have bad allergies).  And the paper towels are great for cleaning up spills.   The best thing about their paper products is that they are made from 100 percent recycled paper (minimum 80% post-consumer, 20% pre-consumer), Hypo-allergenic, Whitened without chemicals containing chlorine or unwhitened, and unscented.

Try It

You can find Seventh Generation products at stores like Target, Giant, or Walgreens or online.  You can also keep up to date on their latest news on Facebook or Twitter.

  1. I store cloth wipes in a plastic bag inside my diaper bag for hand wipe-downs while in public, where kids get all kind of ickies on their hands. My cloth wipes are soaked in tea tree oil and hemp seed oil, which are both natural bacteria fighters. :) we also use the anti-bacterial wipes at the front of stores to wipe down shopping carts before putting the kids in them. momwifeme914[at]gmail[dot]com

  11. All 3 of my kids are out of diapers, but I still carry a supply of diaper wipes in the car. If we get something through the drive through while we are out, they wash their hands with diaper wipes before eating. During the peak of the cold season, I tend to have them wash whenever we get back in the car after they have touched EVERYTHING in the store. (Why must they do that?!?)

Also, I have started carrying individually wrapped vitamin C's (the ones that are like hard candy) in my pocketbook. Instead of giving them a peppermint or something like that, I will give them a vitamin C, instead. (They don't get a lot of candy anyway, and they like the taste of these.)
