Five Favorite Family Time Ideas

8/24/10
Twitter Moms and Lego are participating in a new blogging program about family activities.

I love spending time with my family. We try to find time during the week or on the weekends to do a fun activity together that is within our budget.

Here are some of my favorite family time ideas:

1. Going to the park
We often go to the park and ride bikes or just walk and spend time talking as a family. It's also a great place to have a picnic lunch or dinner or a nice weather day.

2. Game Night
Our game night is usually on the weekend. We will play a DVD game like Disney's Scene It? Or a board game like Monopoly or Connect Four.

3. Going to a Baseball Game
When we have the funds, we'll go to see a baseball game at the Bowie Baysox. We always have a blast! And they have great activities for kids like running the bases after the game and fireworks.

4. Reading Time
I love to cozy up with a fun family book and take turns reading out loud with my son. We've read a lot of great books together!

5. Taking the Dog for a Walk
It may be a simple thing, but we often have great discussions when we are walking our dog in the neighborhood.

Those are some of the things we do as a family. What are your family fun ideas? You can also find more ideas at Twitter Moms and Lego.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

It's Friday again, and I'm looking forward to a nice weekend with my hubby.

Not So Wordless Wednesday: Does This Shirt Make Me Look Pregnant?

8/18/10
pregnancy, belly photo

Does this shirt make me look pregnant?

At 22 weeks, I'm starting to feel pretty pregnant now.  I'm so glad that the nausea that lasted all day is gone; now I only feel sick if I wait too long to eat.

You may have heard that I have been categorized as high risk.  When I had my son, I had a blood transfusion afterwards and apparently now have an anti-Duffy antibody. This antibody could cause some problems with our little girl. I have to see a specialist every 2 weeks so they can monitor her for anemia.  I also have to keep my regular OB appointments and have blood draws every 4 weeks.  On top of all this, I am also rh - so I will be having Rhogam shots again.

So far, everything is going well and there are no signs of anemia.  We are praying that she will grow strong and are so thankful for this little gift from God!

My Teaser:

"Piper shuddered, shoving open the door and stepping inside. Marcus's office had been on the third floor, and Piper headed there, the odd feeling she'd had in the parking lot following her up flight after flight of stairs. Maybe it was the empty offices, the silent halls and the darkened doorways. Whatever the case, Piper's heart pumped with a fear that made no sense, but that couldn't be ignored."

Wordless Wednesday: Cuddles

8/11/10

Ok, so this is a Not-so-Wordless Wednesday post.  You may have seen on Twitter or Facebook the issue that we had with our sweet cat Cuddles recently.  He had a urinary blockage that almost killed him.  Long story short, his urinary disease and his heart disease and the amount of care he needed caused us to make the hard decision to give him up.  One of the vets at the hospital adopted him so that she could give him the medical care that he needed.

We miss Cuddles!  He was my baby for 8 years.  He was also my son's best friend.  But sometimes love is hard and we have to do hard things for the ones we love.  This picture was the last photo we took before Cuddles went to be with his new owner.

Back to School Seventh Generation Kit Review And Giveaway

8/10/10

It's hard to believe that Back-To-School time is just about here!  While you're busy getting your children ready with much-needed school supplies and outfits, have you thought about the things they will need to keep them healthy and germ free in the classroom?

Seventh Generation conducted a survey and found that 82 percent of parents with kids in grades K-5 worry about the germs in their children’s classrooms.

Seventh Generation is a company that has been using the natural disinfecting power of thyme without using harmful chemicals in your home for over 20 years.  According to their website, these products can supposedly kill over 99.99 percent of germs naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.

This school year, Seventh Generation is sharing tips from author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child’s health during back-to-school season.

Dr. Greene suggests these precautions:

Optimize the immune system

*Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt
*Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D
*Build a strong foundation: good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish

Be wise about reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful germs

*Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom
*Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation’s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs** naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
*Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth.
*Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze.

***Refer to disinfecting product labels for full details

Review

I know I worry about germs during cold and flu season especially.  So when I was given the opportunity to review the Seventh Generation Back-To-School Kit, I was excited to try out these products in my home.

I received the disinfecting wipes, disinfecting multi-surface spray cleaner, facial tissue and paper towels.  The disinfecting wipes  and multi-surface spray cleaner can be used on any hard non-porous surface, and both are very easy to clean with.   I used the wipes all around the bathroom area and the spray cleaner was great for the kitchen counters.  I also used the wipes on the pre-owned car seat and stroller that we just bought for our little Peanut due in Dec.  The only downside to the cleaners is that I am not a big fan of the lemon grass scent; but this is my personal preference.

The tissues were not as soft as the tissues I've used in the past, but they held up well to lots of nose blowing (I have bad allergies).  And the paper towels are great for cleaning up spills.   The best thing about their paper products is that they are made from 100 percent recycled paper (minimum 80% post-consumer, 20% pre-consumer), Hypo-allergenic, Whitened without chemicals containing chlorine or unwhitened, and unscented.

Try It

You can find Seventh Generation products at stores like Target, Giant, or Walgreens or online.  You can also keep up to date on their latest news on Facebook or Twitter.
