Aloha Friday: Winter Olympics Fave

2/26/10

Here is how Aloha Friday works from Kailani's blog An Island Life:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

I have enjoyed watching the winter Olympics this year! My favorite sport has been the women's figure skating. But I also have enjoyed watching skiing as well.

My Question For You This Week: What is your favorite winter Olympic sport?

Plain Jayne by Hillary Manton Lodge

2/25/10

Summary (from the Publisher):

Jayne Tate loves her life as it is-living in a big city, working as a reporter for a fast-paced newspaper, and dating a guy who knows nothing about her past. But when her father passes away, she's forced to take another look at what she wants for her future. After losing out on an important career opportunity, Jayne decides to escape to Oregon's Amish country, hoping for solace and maybe a story.

Yet even in the land of buggies and bonnets, Jayne finds life more complicated than she expected. Can she persuade herself that her growing friendship with the mysterious Levi Burkholder is just about research? Where does God fit in all of this? And what's a green tea-drinking, laptop-using, motorcycle-riding reporter to do when a little Plain living starts to change her?

About the Author (from the Publisher):

Hillary Manton Lodge graduated from the University of Oregon's School of Journalism. When not working on her next novel, Hillary enjoys photography, art films, and discovering new restaurants. She and her husband, Danny, reside in the Pacific Northwest.

You can visit Hillary's website here.

My Review:

I truly enjoyed this story. Jayne is a dynamic character who has a troubling past that she needs to deal with but instead, she escapes to write a story on the Amish. She begins discovering things about her life and her faith while she is there.
Her attraction to Levi, a man who has left the Amish community, but still keeps ties to his family, complicates things.

Her struggle with her faith is something that I think many people can relate to. I found the author's perspective about the Amish refreshing. The author brought a great sense of humor and wit to her writing. I would recommend this book to any fan of Amish fiction.

Thank you to Glass Road PR for providing me a copy for review.

Teaser Tuesdays: Framed by Tracie Peterson

2/23/10

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser:

"She looked at the hope and excitement in the faces of her youthful parents....Together they would start a small shipping business...Together they would bury an infant son. But always they would face the joys and sorrows as a team. Two, not one. Would there ever be someone to share her life that way?"

--pg. 15 Framed by Tracie Peterson

What are you reading? If you have a teaser, you can head on over to Miz B's blog or share it here by leaving a comment.

Teaser Tuesdays: Queen Esther & the Second Graders of Doom by Allie Pleiter

2/16/10

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page

* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser:

"Essie had her own personal classification system for the branches of womanhood. There were the "ponytails," which had a subset containing the unpretentious and practical, and another subset of the entirely-too-perky. This could usually be distinguished by height. Not of the woman, but of the ponytail. High ponytails signaled high-level perkiness. Low ones generally denoted practicality."

Aloha Friday: How's The Weather?

2/12/10
writing prompts, blogging prompts

Here is how Aloha Friday works from Kailani's blog An Island Life:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

We have been dealing with crazy snow since last Friday. I'm ready for it to be over. We'll probably be spending our Valentine's Day snowed in unless the roads get cleared up. And while that might sound romantic, being snowed in for nearly a straight week is making us a bit stir crazy. Add to that a rambunctious ten year old who hasn't been at school all week.

My Question For You This Week: How's the weather where you are?

I'm Beginning to Think That Gopher Was Right!

2/11/10
We're heading into Snowmageddon Redux as I type this. I am scheduling this post in case we lose power. They are calling for 12-20" with this storm. I am hoping that they are wrong. With the 30" we already have, where are we going to put it all?

My son is out of school the rest of the week. My hubby is home from work too. I doubt that we'll be going anywhere for several days as we dig out AGAIN...

Here are some more photos from Snowmageddon part 1.

Front of the house by driveway

Our mailbox

Our back steps; You can see part of our heat pump on the left. Yep, it's frozen!

Our backyard playhouse/cottage

I hope that wherever you are, you are safe and warm!

Snowmageddon 2010

This weekend dumped approx. 30" of snow upon these here parts. Can you believe it? They have fondly named this blizzard Snowmageddon. Some people have even called it Snowpocalypse.

We shoveled at least 5 times between Friday night and Saturday night. My hubby shoveled again Sunday afternoon.

School's out for two days. Not sure if they'll be out longer. Many people have lost power (thankfully, ours has stayed on). The main roads are passable if you have an SUV or a truck. But it feels like you're traveling on a washboard. And the side streets...those are pretty much try at your own risk.

And grocery stores are jammed. Again. Because guess what....

We're expecting another 8-12" to fall on us starting tonight!

But oh, snow is so beautiful!

Mompreneur Monday Blog Hop

Welcome to Mompreneur Monday's Blog Hop!

Today's "Mompreneur" is Vilate from Nifty Nappy: Growing up Green. Below you will see one of her top selling items along with an interview on how Nifty Nappy became a reality for Vilate.

Organic Nifty Nappy/Woolie Wrap Combo

Would you like to put your mind at ease about the things you put on your baby’s bum? This diaper is for you. This is my 100% Organic diaper. This new addition to the shop is a sure fire way to try out the Organic Nifty Nappy. I know you will love your new Organic Nifty Nappy paired with a Woolie Wrap. I am so confident in this combo that I am offering you a chance to try it with no worries.

If you *try this combo and don’t love it you can send it back!

This combo will last your little one through the night and the sheets will still be dry! :)

This diaper is anly avaliable in the owl print right now.

Since I make my wool covers from thrift store sweaters and 110% wool I can’t list Fabric Selections. If you will pick a gender though, I will make an appropriate cover for you.

*see my Policies FAQS

Nifty Nappy MAKE-UP: BODY: -Outer layer: Organic cotton knit *makes for adorable baby bums! -Sandwich layer: Organic Hemp fleece *very absorbent -Inside layer: Organic Bamboo velor *absorbent and super soft! LAY IN INSERT: -Organic Hemp Fleece -Organic Bamboo Velor fold in half lay in diaper BAMBOO/HEMP INFORMATION: Organic Bamboo is 70% Bamboo / 30% Cotton Organic Hemp is 45% Hemp / 55% Cotton These make the Nifty Nappy... Super absorbent with less bulk Anti-bacterial Anti-microbial Very durable Wool info: What's the deal on wool....? Wool is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, which helps it not to retain odors and a natural fire retardant. It can absorb up to 40% of its weight in liquid and it allows the body to breathe. These qualities of wool make it an excellent choice for a natural and oh so comfy diaper cover. Cost savings $$$ - PANTS and DIAPER COVER in one! Wool has the wonderful ability to regulate body temperature, it will keep your child warm in winter and cool in summer. Making it the perfect choice for diaper covers any time of the year. Used for generations! IMPORTANT: Wool is only as effective as the amount of absorption you have underneath the cover. The wool needs time to "react" or time to be able to absorb and breathe. If not enough absorption is used then cover will not work as well and you will feel wetness. I use wool for my children and just love using a natural product that has all of these amazing qualities - my children totally enjoy using wool covers, so much more comfy than any other kind of cover - your babies will thank you! You must wash/re-lanolize your cover every few weeks, (or when poo'd on) depending on use. Please allow to air dry between uses. SUGGESTIONS: Sunning the diapers Using Tea Tree oil in the wash and your wipe solution Double soakers at night for a heavy wetter Skirt and legwarmers are adorable too!

Great News From General Mills & A $1 Coupon

myblogspark

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And since mornings are busy at our house, we often have cereal. We especially love General Mills cereals like Cheerios, Lucky Charms, and Trix.

I recently found out that General Mills committed to further reducing the sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. And that the company has already been reducing sugar in their cereals while increasing important nutrients like Vitamin D and calcium.

That's good news! As moms, we want the best nutrition possible for our children. And that includes reducing the amount of sugar our children consume.

As extra incentive to try out their new cereals, General Mills is offering a $1 coupon for one of four General Mills cereals – Trix, Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. You can print off your coupon here.

Disclosure: This information and 4 cereal coupons was provided to me by General Mills and My Blogspark.
