Becca by The Book by Laura Jensen Walker

1/31/10

About the Author(from the publisher):
laura jensen walker

Laura Jensen Walker is an award-winning writer and popular speaker. Her previous novels include Daring Chloe, Turning the Paige, and Reconstructing Natalie, chosen as the first-ever Novel of the Year for Women of Faith conferences. The author of several non-fiction books, Laura lives in Northern California with her husband, Michael, and their canine daughter, Gracie.

Summary(from the publisher):

At twenty-five, free spirited Becca Daniels is still trying to figure out what she wants to be when she grows up. What Becca doesn't want to be is bored. That's why she quit her bookstore job, used her last bit of credit to go skydiving, and how she broke her leg. And that's why, grounded and grumpy, Becca bristles when teased by friends for being commitment-phobic.

In response, Becca issues an outrageous wager-that she can sustain a three-month relationship with the next guy who asks her out. When the guy turns out to be "churchy" Ben-definitely not Becca's type-she gamely embarks on a hilarious series of dates that plunge her purple-haired, free-speaking, commitment-phobic self into the alien world of church potlucks and prayer meetings.

This irrepressible Getaway Girl will have you cheering her on as she "suffers" through her dates, gains perspective on her life's purpose, and ultimately begins her greatest adventure of all.

My Review:

I am a huge fan of Laura Jensen Walker's books! I have read the other two books in the Getaway Girls series, and this one definitely did not disappoint. Becca is a wonderful character who I could relate to: quirky, independent, and a literature fan. I found myself laughing throughout the book at her snarky thoughts and comments.

I think Laura Jensen Walker's approach to this novel is fresh and has a wonderful perspective. This character has not grown up in the church and still hasn't figured out how she feels about God and what He has to do with her life. She is surrounded by Christians throughout the book who present what it means to be a Christian in different ways. There are some who are more traditional in their views and then there are those who seem to be more "out of the box".

I loved how in the back of the book there is the Getaway Girls Guide to "Christianese." The author brings up a very valid point that not every person who walks into a church will even be able to figure out what people are talking about because they haven't heard of the terms that many Christians use. Churches need to be more relatable to people. They aren't just squeaky clean white-washed places of worship filled with the holy. They are filled with broken, struggling, imperfect people in search of a relationship with a holy God.

I highly recommend this for anyone interested in reading about dynamic and genuine characters with an honest world-view.

You can purchase a copy of this book at Amazon

Special thanks to Laura Jensen Walker and Zondervan for providing me with a copy to review.

Here is how Aloha Friday works from Kailani's blog An Island Life:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

I spent the day subbing for a class of third graders. It was quite busy! I am just now getting to my email, blogging, twittering, facebook updates and finishing up some business. Whew!

My Question For You This Week Is: How was YOUR day?

Vital Earth Traditions Sugar Scrubs Review & Giveaway

I don't know about you, but my skin is feeling the effects of winter dryness. It's important to find a good product that will exfoliate dry and dead skin to keep it looking healthy.

I was recently contacted by Kelly Lynch Ring from Vital Earth Traditions to try out her natural sugar scrubs.

What is a sugar scrub?

Sugar scrubs are great exfoliators that peel away the dry and dead skin cells on the surface layer of the skin, revealing smooth and healthy skin underneath. They also contain moisturizing ingredients to keep your skin hydrated.

I absolutely LOVED Kelly's sugar scrubs! Not only do they feel great on your skin, but they also provide aromatherapy while you shower. My favorite sugar scrub is peppermint pattie. It has an invigorating smell of mint that is not too overpowering and leaves you feeling like you just walked out of your own home spa!

Benefits of Vital Earth Traditions products:

*Natural chemical free products for you home and body
*Products are made with fresh local organic ingredients as they are available
*Handmade Process
*Provide the skin with valuable nutrients, medicinal value and that have anti-aging qualities

What if It's God Speaking?

1/11/10
As many of you know, this has been a very difficult time in my family. My brother-in-law was in a very serious car accident on Wednesday. He spent 5 days in the ICU and we hoped and prayed for his recovery. Last night, he went to be with Jesus.

He was a dad, a husband, a son, a friend, but most importantly he loved the Lord.

Thank you for your prayers and for your kind words and emails! I appreciate your friendship and your support for my family.

I'd like to share with you this video of a song by Mandisa "God Speaking." My sister-in-law shared how this song touched her and I pray that it will touch your heart too.

Have you ever heard a love song
That set your spirit free
Have you ever watched a sunrise
And felt you could not breathe
What if it's Him
What if it's God speaking
Have you ever cried a tear that
You could not explain
Have you ever met a stranger
That already knew your name
What if it's Him
What if it's God speaking

Who knows how He'll get a hold of us
Get our attention to prove He is enough
He'll do and He'll use
Whatever He wants to
To tell us I love you

Have you ever lost a loved one
Who you thought should still be here
Do you know what it feels like
To be tangled up in fear
What if He's somehow involved
What if He's speaking through it all

His ways are higher
His ways are better
Though sometimes strange
What could be stranger
Than God in a manger

God is speaking
I love you

Friend Makin Monday: It's Hairy

Don't forget to enter my latest giveaway ending tomorrow: Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion.

I haven't had a hair cut in months. This summer I think was the last time. It's getting kinda long and shaggy.

I try to go as long as possible without cutting my hair to save on moula. But if I could go get a haircut, I think I'd want to get this:

That is really straight hair, and mine's wavy, so maybe something like this:

What about you? If you could get your haircut, what would it look like? Head on over to Amber's blog to get other style ideas.

Thankful Thursday 1/7

1/7/10
Thankful Thursday at Truth 4 the Journey

Life seems to be a bit overwhelming lately. Our financial situation has been stressful. My husband's Nana had a mini-stroke and was hospitalized a few weeks ago. The day after Christmas our basement filled with 6 inches of water after the sump pump stopped working. And yesterday we found out that my brother-in-law was in a serious car accident and is in the ICU. Through all of this, I have prayed and wondered how this could be a part of God's plan.

But I trust in Him and remember this verse:

Psalm 59:16: But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

I am thankful today that I am a part of an amazing family who supports each other. I am thankful that I have an amazing God who is there to turn to when things are difficult. And I am hopeful.

What are you thankful for today? Join Sonya at Truth 4 the Journey to link up.

Skin MD Natural Review & Giveaway

1/5/10

I have been washing my hands constantly this winter to avoid the spread of germs. Over the past couple of weeks with bronchitis, I have probably washed my hands at least 5 times a day. All that washing has made my hands feel like the skin of a reptile.

When I was asked to try out Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion, I was excited to find out if this product would help out my very dry hands!

I applied the lotion after each hand washing. It has a light, non-greasy feel and a very light clean scent. What I liked the most about this lotion is that it did not make me break out in a rash or hives. A lot of perfumed scented lotions cause me to break out and itch because of my sensitive skin and eczema. After using it for a couple of days, I noticed that my dry skin began to improve and feel healthy again. I just need to apply it once or twice a day to maintain my skin's softness.

It is a bit pricey compared to other lotions. It is $18 for a 4 oz bottle, but according to their website, this bottle should last 1 to 2 months with daily use.

Some benefits of Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion:

*Non-greasy
*Hypoallergenic
*Fragrance and Colorant Free
*Paraben Free
*No Animal Products & Testing

Try It: You can try Skin MD Natural Shielding lotion for yourself. Click here to find out how to get a sample.

Giveaway: Skin MD Natural has generously provided a full size bottle for one of my lucky readers.

Aloha Friday: New Year's Edition

1/1/10
writing prompts, blogging prompts

Here is how Aloha Friday works from Kailani's blog An Island Life:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

It's New Year's Day 2010! I'd like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope that 2010 will bring wonderful surprises.

I've heard some debate about how to pronounce the new year. I think I like saying "Twenty Ten" more than "Two Thousand and Ten." It's quicker and just sounds better to me.

My Question This Week: How are you going to pronounce the new year? Twenty-ten? Or Two Thousand and Ten?
