Here is how Aloha Friday works from Kailani's blog An Island Life:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

We've been getting thunderstorms off and on again. My poor dog freaks out every time. She jumps on the couch with me and shakes or follows me around the house whining. My cat, on the other hand, runs off to hide somewhere and I won't see him for a while. We're supposed to get more thunderstorms today.

My Question This Week: What do your pets do during a thunderstorm and how do you comfort them?

  1. I've always heard that your pets react how you do, but that doesn't really make sense because we have two dogs: a young Golden Retriever who could care less and and old, Old English Sheepdog, who doesn't like storms anymore . . .and we've been getting plenty, too!

I just let my old dog know I'm there and try not to show distress myself. I noticed recently that he just likes to be under my feet and then he's fine! I kind of enjoy the storms, as long as they're at night and we have sunshine during the day!!!

    Good luck!

  3. My cat absolutely is terrified of thunderstorms and will stay very, very close to me. If she is not on top of me she is following me. The weather loaches in the aquariums become rather active, I have not noticed any changes in the other fish. Our newest pet, a bearded dragon, appears to not notice.

  4. Our two dogs run to the shed and hide until its over. The cats seem to act normal but they are outside farm cats so maybe they are just used to it. Btw I gave you a lovely blog award stop by and pick it up!!

  5. We only have a little dog and she does ok during thunderstorms. I would imagine we'd place her back in her crate if she gets too crazy. :)

  7. Funny thing is neither one of my dogs react to a storm. It can be really bad and right on top of us and they could care less. Pretty lucky, I guess.

  8. We don't have pets, but we do have kids. We try to explain thunder and lightning to them and then give them lots of hugs and kisses.

  9. Our pets are very mellow. They don't seem to care much. We have several guinea pigs and a little Yorkie dog.

  11. My two nerdy pre teens are too busy freaking out for me to even notice the poor cats.

... although the oldest wanted to go out in the rain to meet his girlfriend that other night!! In the thunder!!!! And he is really afraid of storms. AHHH young love!!

  12. All our pets are outdoor pets and they find shelter on their own. The dog has his house, the goats have the barn and the cats hide under the porch or in the garage. All is well with all of them.

  13. I'm lucky in two ways: 1) No pets and 2) I live is So Cal where loud storms are far and few between. My son might have an issue due to the loudness of thunder.

  15. Our pets (three cats) live entirely on their own outside always and I confess I've never considered whether they get nervous in a storm or not. Perhaps that's because I love storms so much myself or perhaps it's because I'm not an animal lover and therefore never spare a thought for them at all--they are my kids pets, not mine.

  20. My MIL uses this spray for her dog, when he goes crazy insane when people come to the door.

It's for those who get anxious/nervous. It's homeopathic, which means it's all natural and safe to use... even on pets.
