Day Out with Thomas Family Fun 2017 @strasburgRR #sponsored #DayOutWithThomas

6/23/17
I received tickets for my family to Day Out with Thomas at Strasburg Rail Road.  All opinions are mine.

This past weekend we visited Strasburg Rail Road in Ronks, PA for a Day Out with Thomas.  This is one of our favorite events that my girls look forward to each year!  If you have a Thomas and Friends fan at home, it is definitely a must-do activity with the family.

The weather forecast called for thunderstorms and humidity, but we were fortunate.  While it was very hot and humid, there were only a few drops of rain on the drive there and on the drive back.

The set-up was a little different this year.  The paved parking lot was not available due to the tent arrangements, so we parked in the field.  Parking is free.

Thomas the Tank departs every half hour during the designated times for a 20 minute ride.  While he's pulled into the station for his breaks, you can get your photo taken with him (either before or after your ride). Photographers will take your photo (they have a special package deal), but you can also take your own.  Percy is an add-on to your ticket with a shorter 12 minute ride.

There is a designated line area with a clock so that you know what time to get in line.  They suggest arriving an hour before your train time so you can get your tickets and participate in some activities before your train.  They also have a designated place for stroller parking.

We usually get in line about 15 minutes before ticket time to be at the front of the line and choose our train car.  We chose to sit in a train closest to Thomas so that we could exit quickly to get in line for our Thomas photos.   (There's nothing worse than an impatient toddler getting cranky in a long line when it's hot!)

A conductor visits everyone on the train during the ride. The train cars are very detailed and the seats are comfortable.  You can also adjust your seat to flip sides so that you don't have to sit going backwards.  The windows are open to let air flow through.  It was a bit hot waiting for the train to move, but was much more comfortable once we got going.

After our train ride, we took a quick photo with Thomas and then headed over to take photos with Percy.

There are many activities both under the tent and by the trains. Under the tents, you can get Thomas and Friends temporary tattoos, play at train tables, watch videos, hear live music, draw with sidewalk chalk, ride a mini-Thomas, grab a bite to eat, and purchase souvenirs.  There are also some cute photo opportunities, including a visit with Sir Topham Hat.   {AB did not want to take a photo with him this year}

AB would have stayed on the mini Thomas train all day if she could have.  They had one longer track and several smaller round tracks and there was hardly a line when we were there.

There are also cranky cars, the Puffer Belly train, and this year they added an additional train with a wagon behind it.  We also saw pump car rides which we haven't seen previously.

Tips:
Strasburg Rail Road

  • Arrive at least an hour before your train ride to allow for time to park and pick up your tickets at will-call if you haven't printed them at home
  • Bring a small portable fan to cool off with while waiting under the tents on hot days
  • Bring small snacks and water for the little ones
  • Don't forget sunscreen!
  • You can take your own photos with your cell phone if you don't want to purchase a photo package
  • Rides with Percy are an additional add-on to your ticket
  • Day Out with Thomas is rain or shine

The cost of your ticket is well worth all the included activities.  We made some wonderful memories at Strasburg Rail Road and my girls are hoping to see Thomas and Percy again when he returns in September!

This definitely sounds like a fun day out with children. Makes me wish my grand niece lived closer--I'm sure she would love it!
