SlugTerra: Return of The Shane Gang {Ends 3/16}

Disney XD

On Feb. 12th, Shout! Factory Kids, in collaboration with Nerd Corps Entertainment, released SlugTerra: Return of the Shane Gang to DVD.  Containing 5 episodes and three short bonus "slugisodes", SlugTerra is one of the latest animated series on Disney XD your kids are probably talking about.

Slugterra is an epic sci-fi comedy/adventure set deep underground, where the ammos alive and only the quick survive! In this luminous, high-tech, underground world, every cavern holds a new adventure, a new battle and weird little slugs to be discovered.

SLUGTERRA: RETURN OF THE SHANE GANG

Eli Shane is determined to be the greatest slugslinging hero of them all. To do it, he’ll need to collect and train an army of little critters called slugs. When these magical creatures are fired at 100 MPH out of a high-powered blaster, they transform into powerful battle beasts! The adventure follows Eli and his team of friends as they explore the underground caverns of Slugterra, challenge rivals and each other to duels, upgrade their cool gear, and generally have a blast in this never-before-imagined world. But there is a very real threat to Slugterra; Dr. Blakk is seeking to “ghoul” the slugs, transforming them into feral mindless weapons!  No one has been able to stand up to Blakk’s powerful ghouls and army of henchmen… until now!

My son has mentioned this show to me before, but I really didn't have any idea what it was about.  When I sat down to watch the episodes, I wasn't sure what to expect.  Animated "Pokemon-like" sci-fi series really aren't my thing.  But they are my son's favorite genre so I figured I'd suffer through it.

SlugTerra Disney Channel Series
Surprisingly, I didn't find myself nodding off.  The premise of a 15 year old boy who loses his dad kept my interest.   Where was this boy's mother?  What is he going to do all alone in a strange world where people battle each other by shooting slugs out of a shooter?  And why in the world do they use slugs that change into dramatic beasts?

SlugTerra Disney SeriesThe characters are interesting and the whole slug world is definitely imaginative, though very similar to other "battling" or "dueling" against evil type series that my son has watched.   I like that there is a smart and a little snarkish girl named Trixie to balance out all the male characters.  Boys in the 9-13 age range will definitely be intrigued by this series, and there is a bit of story line to capture the attention of the girls too.
