{2012 Holiday Gift Guide} Love's Christmas Journey

holiday gifts, gift ideas

Love Comes Softly series, holiday movies, Fox Home Entertainment

While still mourning the loss of her husband and daughter, recently widowed Ellie King (Natalie Hall) visits her brother Aaron Davis (Greg Vaughan) and his children for Christmas. Ellie does her best to enjoy the holidays, even making new friends with Mrs. Thompson (JoBeth Williams), a local shop keeper, and handsome admirer Deputy Strode (Dylan Bruce). Settling in nicely with her brother's family, Ellie also meets Erik (Bobby Campo), a young man abandoned by his outlaw father whom Aaron has taken in as one of his own. When Aaron travels out of town to purchase adjacent land for farming, Ellie agrees to watch his children, but the season’s festivities are threatened when Aaron goes missing.

My Thoughts:

The Love Comes Softly series is a wonderful family-friendly set of movies that you can sit and watch with your older kids (tweens and teens).  It has "old fashioned" family values while interweaving history and life in the west.

The sequencing of the movies can get a little confusing to keep up with all of the characters in the family.  You may want to start with Love Begins and Love's Everlasting Courage which explains the beginning of the family's journey with Clark Davis and his first wife Ellen.  Then I suggest you watch Love Comes Softly, the story of how Clark Davis meets his second wife Marty.  The Christmas movie will make more sense to you once you realize that this story involves Clark and Marty's two children Aaron and Ellie.  I had to go back through the series in my mind to figure out who these characters were since there are so many.

Each movie shows the trials and triumphs of the family and this Christmas installment is no exception.  There are plenty of trials in the Davis family, including dealing with loss and grief, a theme prevalent throughout the series.  You'll also find some interesting characters in the town, including the town's "Scrooge".

The pace can be a little slow in spots, but the action picks up and keeps your attention.  There is even some romance for the teen crowd with a younger couple in the story line.  I like the "old fashioned courting" aspect to give teens another perspective on dating and relationships.  The acting is very well done and you may recognize a few actors like Sean Astin, JoBeth Williams, Natalie Hall and Greg Hall.

You'll find great themes of faith, romance, and family strength to add to your feel good Christmas movie collection.  It will make a great gift for fans of the series!

You can find out more about the series at the Love Saga site.
