Aloha Friday: Cellular Woes

Don't forget to check out my book giveaway of Rose House by Tina Ann Forkner here.

Here is how Aloha Friday works from Kailani's blog An Island Life:

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My sweet dog chewed up my cell phone about a month ago to the point where it was nearly coming off it's hinge. But it still worked until last night. I was talking on the phone with my hubby, got interrupted by my son for a couple of minutes, and had to hang up. When I went to close the phone, it completely came off the hinge and went black. Dead. As a doornail.

Mind you, this is my SECOND cell phone to die in this manner. My first cell phone had a little antennae and I left it on the table in the living room for a few minutes to cook dinner. When I came back, the antennae was all chewed up. And yet, it still worked for a while....

There is nothing like going to the Verizon Wireless dealer and telling them the dog ate your phone. And then having them ask when you are due for an upgrade and then find out that it isn't for another six months. Every phone in the place had some great deal for a NEW contract...$19.99, $29, $0 FREE after savings....but if you already have a plan, what is your cost to buy a replacement phone?

$199-$299!!!!!

So, needless to say, I am without a cell phone. Luckily, my in-laws have a cell they kept when they upgraded and said we could use it. They can mail it to us, which will probably take a few days. In the meantime, I feel like a girl who has left her purse on the Subway. I can't text, I can't call, and I don't have a home phone. No connection to the outside world except the internet.

My Question For This Week is: What would you do without your cell phone? Would you pay $199-299 to replace it?

If you are participating in Aloha Friday, link up below so we can commiserate.

I'd dig around through some of old cell phones and go back to one of those or start calling friends to see if they had an old one.

I would look on Craigslist and see if I could find one. Then, possibly use an old one if I still have it.

If not, yes, I probably would pay it. I am a big baby though and wouldn't want to be without a phone.

Not sure what I'd do! Those contracts are sticklers!

I bought a T-Mobile phone ($50)at Target and then purchased a 1000 minute card for $100 and it works great. A thousand minutes lasts me for about a year and.....I have no monthly cellular bill. I've done this for 5 years now and I feel I am getting by real inexpensively!

Good luck!

I have gone through many cellphones and never had insurance on them and did have to pay. Verizon is cool though b/c they keep extras of models so you just have to pay $50 to replace it, you keep the battery. At least that is the way it was a few years ago. I have a blackberry now and that baby has insurance. I have put a phone on top of my car and drove away, dropped one in the washer, closed the trunk door down on another. I did go without one for about 6 months. Then hubster wanted to get another one in case of emergencies. Everyone else hated that they could never get in touch with me. Aloha and take care.

I could live without it. I hate talking on the phone and don't text. I really only have it so hubs can call me when I'm out with the kids and for emergencies.

Hubs, on the otherhand, is addicted to his blackberry and facebook.

I would probably look for a used one to use in the interim though. Just for the security of having one, I guess.

When my phone got a little too beat up, I got a fairly cheap replacement that had a mail-in rebate. My husband and I share a cell phone on his parents' family plan - yes, it is great to be poor college students. Or not. We used to each have our own phone, but it was cheaper to downsize and go with his family. It sure sucks to not have a cell phone all the time, though. Good luck!

My daughter dropped mine in a glass of water once, and I had to take my hubby's old one and HE got a new one! Then when that one died, I just bought a used one, because I hate spending so much money on something that isn't built to last.

I love my phone plus with kids its a necessity. My cell is my house phone

I barely use mine and in fact have a pay as you go because I cannot even justify a real contract-LOL. I do like having it just in case though. I would LOVE an iPhone, but really cannot justify that.

I saw you won the blog redesign from April Showers. Congrats!!! I am looking forward to seeing the new look.

Ugh, I'm protecting my current phone like it was a new one! LOL! Our phone plan is up in November and I want to switch from Sprint to Verizon, so my phone has got to last till we switch! Otherwise, I'll be stuck without a phone - I will NOT buy a new phone! ;-)

Having just moved, we donated a lot of stuff to the thrift store. We went to look around inside and they had a ton of cell phones for sale for really cheap!

I wouldn't pay over $200 for a new phone! No way! I would ask my friends or family if they had an old one I could borrow. If not, I would check on eBay for one.

I can only imagine what it must be like without your cell phone. I'm the same way, I don't have a backup if anything happens to my blackberry. I can upgrade in January. A friend of mine got the Storm and I am soooo jealous. Anyway, good luck with your phone. Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

I would, I can't be without a cell phone.

I would have to shop around more or begin paying on a pay as you go phone or something!

I"m guessing you don't have any type of insurance plan on the phone? We don't have a home phone so a cell phone is a MUST for me. If it were me, I'd get a new one.
