Things I Love Thursday: Laura Jensen Walker

5/28/09

I love reading great books and I found a wonderful series by Laura Jensen Walker called the Getaway Girls. This is a series about a group of friends who have a book club and reenact adventures from some of the novels they read together, including traveling to Paris, hot air balloon riding, and other fun activities.

Laura Jensen WalkerThe latest book, Turning the Paige is Paige's story. This book made me laugh, cry, & cheer for Paige's character. Paige is a divorced 35 year old woman that has some boundary issues with her mother. Her mom is alone and has some health issues, which causes Paige to feel that it is her responsibility to take care of her mom, even if it means giving up some of her own dreams.

I totally related to Paige's struggle with feeling alone after having been through the heartache of a divorce. I also could relate to her guilt over wanting to take care of her mom but yet also wanting the opportunity to live her own life. I won't give away the plot, but this novel may require a good box of tissues and some chocolate!

Laura Jensen Walker is one of my favorite authors. She has such a great sense of humor and writes about real characters who struggle with issues that you can relate to: family, faith, relationships & what to do when things don't go the way you planned. She has also personally gone through some difficult struggles, as she is a cancer survivor.

Here is a clip from her bio at her website:

"By the time she was 23, Laura had climbed the Eiffel Tower, trod the steps of the Parthenon, skied (okay, snowplowed) in the Alps, rode in a gondola in Venice, and wept at the ovens of Dachau. She’d also learned how to fold her underwear into equal thirds, make a proper cup of English tea, and repel the amorous advances of a blind date by donning combat gear and a gas mask."

I highly recommend that you check out this great book as well as some of her other great titles!

I'm always on the lookout for good reads. I'll have to add this series to my list!

That sounds like a really good book. I've been lazy lately and am checking out books on cd which I can listen to in the car on my way to and from work. Because by the time I sit down or get into bed I'm asleep.

Sounds like a good series. I'll have to see if our library has those.
